advice on audio build- missing anything?

Hey all.

Im an audio newbie. Love music, but have never put an aftermarket system in my car.

I've done some research today on what I want and what should fit and is compatible but I just want to be sure.

I dont want the loudest system, just excellent sound quality. Im not looking for nav/video of the head unit. I want some bass, but nothing you can hear a block away.

Ill list out what Ive researched.

Headunit

Pioneer FH-P800BT Premier™ Double-DIN CD Receiver with Built-In Bluetooth® Wireless and USB Direct Control of iPod

Front Speakers

TS-C520PRS 5¼" PRS Component Speaker Package with 150 Watts Max. Power

Rear Speakers

TS-C720PRS 6-3/4" PRS Component Speaker Package with 200 Watts Max. Power

Crutchfield states the 5 1/4 fit both front and rear but the 6 3/4 will not fit the rear. Is this correct? I thought the rears were 6 x 8. The Pioneer site states:
6" x 8" and Shallow Mount Adapters Included

So would these work, or do I need to run the 5 1/4 in the rear as well?

I would also need a Metra Kit (double din) to run this head unit correct?

I mostly listen to rock/metal, a little Eminem, so I dont need a lot of bass.

Would you suggest a subwoofer with this set up?

Also, would you suggest running an amp to drive the front/rear speakers?
4 channel amp?

Im not experienced with amps, but I thought the following would pair well with the front/rear

PRS-D4200F PRS-Series 4-Channel Full-Range Class FD Amplifier with ICEpower Technology

Where would be the ideal place to mount this? Trunk or under a seat?

If I need or a subwoofer is recommended I checked this one out.

TS-W2502D210" Champion Series PRO Subwoofer with 3000 Watts Max. (800 Watts Nom.)

Overkill?

I would need a seperate amp to run this, correct. A single channel amp?

PRS-D1200SPL Class D Mono Amplifier with 2400 Watts Max. Power

With 2 amps, I would want to run a capacitor correct?
What size? how many farad should it be? brand?

I know I would then need the misc amp wiring kits, speaker harnesses, and the steering wheel interface so I can retain steering wheel controls.

Comments about this possible setup? Did I miss anything. Under kill anything?Over kill anything.

Mostly not sure about the Amps.

Thanks for reading and any comments/opinions

you'll want a sub but get something reputable. also, you should put 6x9s in the rear deck, not components. and don't worry about running a cap.

suggestions on a reputable sub?

Why not components in rear, I thought they had the best sound quality?

any other comments on the rest of my setup?

Take a look at my equipment list for my install. Seems like you're headed in a very similar direction. I can highly recommend everything I used.

The Pioneer sub you listed there is complete overkill for the purposes you stated. A sub designed for that level of power will also not be as musical as you would probably like given your mentioning of the music choices.

The Pioneer Premier HU that you listed is the same one I have installed. I find that although the volume ranges from 0 to 62, I never need to turn it up past 25.

i like the infinity perfects and the alpine type r, but there are plenty of other choices.

components are great for the front (most important) since they can set your sound stage and are what you'll hear the most but it's overkill for the rears and you'll be plenty happy with a set of 6x9s.

for sub amps, i love the jbl bp series (600.1 is a great and affordable choice) but there are many new series out there that'll do the job. the most important here is to get a reputable brand because you can't just go by specs vs. price. remember that you get what you pay for.

basically, shoot for double din HU (like you suggested), metra kit, sub(s) and enclosure(s), sub amp (monoblock), components in the front, 6x9 in the rear, 4 channel amp for the interior speaks, wiring kit to hook everything up.

Dondo,

Thanks for the feedback. I just wasnt sure if I had everything I'd need for a nice system and If I got the amps rights.

For the rear speakers, its basically just overkill putting components back there then.

Thanks

Good rule of thumb. The further behind the listener, the larger the speaker should be. This has nothing to do with volume output, but rather frequency sound staging. 5 1/4" speakers have little to zero low frequency output. The sound they produce is very directional in nature and will pull your soundstage more towards the rear of the vehicle. 6x8/9's on the other hand, have much more cone area and can reproduce lower frequencies MUCH better than a 5 1/2" or even a 6 1/2". In this situation, much better suited IMO.

I went with 6x8 Infinity Kappa Components in the front, 6x9 Infinity Kappa 3-Ways in the rear and an Elemental Designs SQ10 in a small box in the trunk. All of this powered by an MB Quart PAB-5400 5-Channel Amp. It worked VERY well.

If you are going to add any type of speaker upgrade with upgraded tweeters I can tell you that you are most likely going to want a subwoofer. I installed the Infinity speakers first. I bought them since they were all drop in (for a base radio, not Bose) and had some of the lowest frequency response that I could find. They did have some bass, but as with any speaker, if you force it to play all frequencies it is most likely going to take away from the mid-range.

High pass the cabin speakers and have a small subwoofer take care of the lows and now the cabin speakers can reproduce the mid range frequencies better. This also helps with rattles introduced in the car since the cabin speakers aren't hitting as hard or moving as much compared to them playing sub-bass notes.
