if they have I am pretty sure they would have posted pics and bragged about it

The radio HU is configured different for EU/other markets. HU is needed to display AC functions correctly.
If you were to hook up EU controls, the radio would not display the functions correctly.
Auto AC will not work in US RX-8 with the original radio installed.
