12" screen

While I am waiting to sell my current car before I get a RX8, I've got a question. Will a 12" screen fit in the center dash where the existing radio is? It is the screen from mp3car.com there SKD 12.1" the dims are 10.85"Wx7"H. I know i will be doing my own glass work for it to work but I wasn't sure if the width is possible. When I drove one I didn't think about bringing the template of the screen with me. If it will fit I will be controlling a PC through it. I wanted to find a HU that I could control from the screen but nobody has one.

i'm pretty sure that's a negative ghost rider. but there have been several people who fit double din sized screens in using the metra kit. and they look sexy as hell. but just asking, why do you NEED or WANT a screen that big in your car. i had a smaller tv than that growing up. i was poor

Well, I wanted to put it in there just cause. They have an 8" and a 10", but also they are 4:3 not a 16:9 like the 12.1".

16:9 on a 12" screen is pretty useless. Watch some videos on a double din and then realize you're not going to be having people over for "movie night" in your car.

Get the metra kit and a good double din HU and you'll be happy.

Kinda my thoughts as well. Most movies aren't exactly 16:9 anyway. You STILL have some letter boxing. Movies are shot to look great in the theater.

Regardless, anything is possible if you've got the money and the glasswork skills. But if you're just looking to fab up a beauty panels to snap into the existing headunit location.... you're out of luck.

I know that about a movie, but they do look better on a 16:9 compared to a 4:3 screen. Otherwise the use of a 16:9 screen would not have come out. As far as the glass work itself wont be too bad, it will be more of an issue if the width of the screen will work since the center dash narrows as it goes down toward the shifter. If I could find a decent 10" screen I would go with that, but I haven't found anything yet. I found one that was a USB powered screen but would like to find one that is driven through DVI, HDMI or if I have to VGA. When I am closer to doing this project I am sure there will be something slighly smaller out, since no one is really interested in my current car as of now.

Why do you people want tvs in your car? What place has traffic so bad, you can afford the time to watch a two hour movie. I put a flip up in my 7 cuz I needed a radio and it was lyin around. I think the road is plenty full of stupid drivers who need my full attention. I'm not dissin the whole in car cinema thing, I just don understand it. You could spend the money on more important stuff. Stuff that says MAZDASPEED.
