Ugly Calipers No More!
I had the option to powder coat, but that meant total disassembly, all rubber parts out, etc. So it is just heat resistant red. I know it's not the right 'velocity!', but I think it is a definate improvement!
What do you think?

Looks great in the pics! Which brand paint did you use? I'm thinking of doing this, but am wondering of the color match as Velocity Red is not fire engine red and the paint I've seen looks pretty bright?
Other way to ask you the same question, if doing it again, would you choose that color or something else like silver, etc?
Last thing, did you do all four at the same time, or do the fronts, then the backs. I've noticed that 2 part paint systems have a pretty short 4-6 hr time after mixing before it hardens like a rock. So wonding how long it took to do the job?

Red...
Yes, you are probably right, that shade is a little 'bright'.
It's just hi-temp header/block type paint that only comes in like five colours....
Buddy had the powder coat available, but it was a big deal to stip out the pistons, boots, fittings etc. Same for the other option, a nice baked on ceramic - but you have to bake it to cure it, again strip all the rubbers.

Info on painting calipers -
First off, it's REAL easy to do, and cheap too. For paint, use Testor's model paint and a brush. Yes, no kidding. It's an enamel, and will bake on VERY hard once the caliper heats up.
I've known a number of guys that have painted calipers this way, all with great success. Some are track guys that do some SERIOUS track events (read: VERY high brake temps, very corrosive brake dust) and have their calipers looking great even years later.
Use some brake cleaner to thoroughly clean the caliper surface off, then liberally brush it on. A nice wet brush gives the best results - when it goes on thick, you won't have any brush marks.
Best part is there's a HUGE variety of colors, and two bottles of Testors and a small model brush (about 1/4" wide) will set you back about $4 at Wal-Mart.
I still laugh when I see people spending $50 on the Folia-Tec kit...
And, if you are worried about it getting chipped, flaking off, whatever (which it won't do) a bottle of paint and a brush will touch it up in a jiffy.
BTW, lighter colors will get dirtier/look dirtier faster. But, it's usually easy to clean, especially with rims like the RX-8's that you can access the calipers for cleaning.

Looks really good, and I hope that you like it, but yellow may have been a better choice with the v. red. Every car I've ever had, I've pained my calipers yellow, so my tit. 8 won't be any different.

The red clashes and draws the eye down off the fender and into the wheel - go black or silver (sorry, my opinion)
If I do this I would not choose the color of the car but an accent color of the car - unless it was black or silver
hmm I just visited the Porsche website and they have a pic of a car with red calipers on what looks to be silver or a titanium car. Guess we all have different tastes.

hey what do you all think of the new ceramic disc brakes on the enzo (and challenge stradalle?) and the porsche GT3? Tiff talks about the ceramic disc brakes in this video:
