Well....It comes with 2 150lb struts per door cause its a universal kit and some cars have very heavy doors...In the installation in the rx8 you need only on2 150lbs struts per door...But still its not very secure if youhave aftermarket speakers which are heavier...
Well after almost 2+ years with the doors i am now having one 180lb strut per door but i am still not very happy..I ll install soon another 80lb strut per door so it can be lifted by itself..The closing is not a problem...
The clearance is a basic problem and if you see the installation cd which comes with the kit it suggests to make new panels or modify your door panels...

I know about the GT Factory kit- I have one. But the two 150lbs struts supplied are much too strong for the lightweight RX8 door. Aftermarket speakers aren't going to make your door weight any noticablly more....
I am going to switch to two 90lbs struts per door. You're saying oyu are getting two 180-lbs struts per door? That is insane. You will have to hang from the door to close it.

The servo required for something like that would be fun to see. I certainly haven't heard anything about it, although I'm sure it's possible if someone wanted to take 5 minutes to open and shut their doors.

I don't have a pic of the actual hinge itself since I let GT Factory do the install. I can say that it's essentially the standard hinge with a large back plate in the shape of a triangle to connect to three mounting points.
this is a pic of my car to show that the hinge really opens up nicely with plenty of clearance.

Vertical Doors Inc makes a bolt on kit, which is what i have. They come with easy to follow, illustrated instructions. I had a shot install them, but if you were so inclined i suppose you could do it yourself.

Any pics installed? I have the VDI Kit on my cavalier, but it isnt the easiest to get in and out. Is that a problem with the kit from them for the 8?

I put the VDI kit on my car myself. It took about 6 hours doing a majority of the work by myself. The only major fab work to be done is you have to cut out the inside of the fender to make room for the hinge assembly. I just took a grinder and sliced out that I needed and then rounded the edges down. One of my roommates helped out for about 30 mins. Getting in and out takes a little getting used to, but now I can do it easily.

the thing about that GT kit is that it looks like to doors go up fairly high. not so with the VDI kit. I cant say that its very difficult to get in or out if you know how to use the doors. The only difficulty would be to gusts to your car who dont know how they work. Half the time i dont even bother raising the doors, i just use them like regular doors, which yields me a good foot and half to two feet of clearance (horizontally)

If you get your doors oer 80degrees the inner dash of the door will hit and rub when u open up the door..You need to cut it..
Also arent you guys bored to get in and out of the car all the times a passenger wants to get in the next seat??I am thinking to install the stock mechanism again..I c if this can happen though...

Yeah but all the women dont have the power to lift it safe and close it safe..Especially close it..If the let the door bounce when they get it down or if they go to open it regular and fast it will cause problems in the future with the mechanism...

You have to run two struts or the pivot action won't work properly.
You can't just run one 150 lb strut. If 150 is enough lift (which it probably isn't), then you need 2 75 lb struts to make the lever arm work properly.
You probably need two 85 lb struts.

Thanks mm...I have a 180lb strut per door and i ll install one 85lb per door so i ll have in total 265per door..Just because the aftermarket speaker and tweeter weight more than the stock and i want to be sure...
So will it be better to have 1 180lb+1 85lb per door or to have 2 130lb struts per door??What would work better?2 equal struts or one bigger one smaller??
Anyhow..thanks for the info
