License plate installation help, lol

How does one screw up putting plates on a car? Have the little metal thingy fall off, into the bumper and I believe is resting on top of the actual bumper, likely nestled between that and the bumper cover.

I know it will likely fall off, but it's going to bug me. Anyone have a suggestion for getting it back and reinstalling it? Or should I just knock the other one out of place and use plastic replacements and move on with my life?

Have to take off the bumper to access it from the back. When I took my bumper off I expoxied bolts on to it with threads sticking out of the bumper.
