Help me decide on tint!

Hi guys. I need some help.

I have an appointment this Friday to have my windows tinted, and even now I still cannot decide exactly what I want to do. It's driving me nuts, so I thought hearing some of your guys' opinions could help.

Basically, my car is white so the darker the tint the better it'll look. Right now, the choice is between 30% and 20% tint all around, excluding the windshield of course. I don't really like 30% that much, but it's safer as far as police go. 20% looks great, especially on a white car, but I'm scared shitless of getting pulled over. I'm still in school and can't really afford a re-tint, and I don't want to pay nearly $200 for a tint that I don't really want, like the 30%.

I've got the nerve to go for the 20%, but I'll hang myself if I get pulled over in less than a year. I've heard of people getting pulled over for dark tints less than a week after they got it. I've also heard of people running dark tints for years without any issues. I live in Bel Air, Maryland, for what it's worth. Cops here aren't all too plentiful, but every cop hates sporty looking cars, and I feel kind of like a target.

Anyway, I'll quit rambling. What do you guys think? Any white 8s around here running on a 30% tint? What are some of your guys' experiences with illegal tints?

go darker. if you see a cop roll your windows down. if you see a cop and it's raining roll your windows down. you should be used to keeping an eye out for cops by now. you'll be fine

Yeah, that's what I've been hearing. "Make sure you roll your windows down" and all of that; seems easy enough. I really do want to go darker.

Here's a question: Do they check for window tint at emissions inspection? This might sound like the dumbest question ever, but I still haven't had my first emissions inspection and am genuinely curious. Emissions testing is the only inspection we have, and it's every 2 years, so I just want to make sure I guess lol.

20% really isn't extremely dark. It's the ghetto 5-15% stuff that will get you in trouble IMO. I've had 20% on all of my cars over the past 10 years and have lived in Washington state for most of it (which is not know for being lenient on stuff like this) and Oklahoma (they don't care about anything here lol). I've been pulled over plenty of times and they have never mentioned my tint.

They don't care about tint when they do emission checks btw. I have 5% tint all around and yes I've been pulled over for it. I recommend going with the lighter tint.. just to avoid any hassle.

So how's that work out? They give you a fix-it ticket and you have to remove it? I live in a pretty suburban area and I guess in the end it all comes down to what type of area you live in. I dunno, man.

It's a shame people have to worry about things such a tints...

Look bro, get what you reallyw ant and don't be afraid of anything else. Do like everyone says and "when u see a cop roll your windows down." That is what i did with my old 4 door car. I had 35% on the front two, 20% everywhere else.

In NYC, anything below 60% is illegal which is total horseshit but whatever. You are allowed tints on the back windows, as lots of cars even come factory like that built right into the glass. I was "targeted" for my tints by many a state trooper and was pulled over. They don't give me a ticket for the tints since i roll my widows down and voila, but they just use that as an excuse to pull you over to find something else wrong, which if your a good boy shouldnt be a problem lol

In florida the legal limit is like 35%. I have 15 all around (with a strip on the front) and I have never been pulled over. (Lately I have been keeping my windows up because of the heat) Looks great on white too. I also got a really good deal. Around $100

Grog, I have 15%. I should've gone with the 5%. Cops, for the most part, will not pull you over primarily for your tints. It's more of a secondary thing. If you don't have anything illegal other than your tints, such as no front plate, don't worry about it. Believe me, MD cops aren't that bad.

Actually, unless NYC is different from NY State tint laws which I doubt, anything below 70% is illegal.

Not sure how cops are in your area but ive been pulled over just because of my tint. Depends on the cop, I've gotten a fix it ticket for the tint and another ticket that's non corrective so I have to pay the fine which I believe is $150-170 in Cali.

MOST cops are only gonna mess with you if it is 5-10% or if you have too large of a stripe on your windshield. I've been pulled over before with 5% on other cars and they never even said anything about it.

I have 35% on my silver 8 and I don't think it looks bad at all. During the day it looks pretty dark, at night it still looks really dark. The legal limit in tennessee is 35%, so that's what I went with. You gotta think about how small the windows really are. The smaller the windows, the darker your windows look. I think 20-35% tint is the best looking. The idiot that had it before me had 5% tint on it and I couldn't see out of the windows at night if there wasn't a street light close by.

I got 40% done on the sides because you have to account for the factory tint and I didn't want any hassle through multiple states. In other words when you put 40% on it you're closer to 35% whereas if you put 35% on it you're likely around 30%. It worked fine for me, dark enough on the sides, and most of all, I feel remotely no sun glare unlike before with factory tint where it felt like the sun was brushing the side of my face on a hot day. Rear is at 15% and a 15% on the front windshield on the top to reduce glare.

Well, I thought about it, and tomorrow at 5 PM they'll be throwing a 20% all-around tint on my 8. I'm still scared and still hesitant, but I don't want to pay $175 for a tint that isn't dark enough for me. No tint isn't really an option either; dark tint looks great on white cars and I'm itching to have it. Sometimes you gotta think with that silly "**** DA PO-LICE" mindset and just go with what you really want.

Thanks for the input, guys. It did help. I'll post pictures tomorrow!
