Anyone thought about redoing their upholstery?

For those people that didn't get an RX-8 in either Red or Black but still liked the idea of having the interior match their exterior, did anyone look up redoing the inside? I have a Sunlight silver and thought about swapping in light gray pieces of leather to mimic the factory two-tone appearance that is only available in red and chapparal.

Just wanted to know if anyone else here had given that sort of idea much thought.

If you were to check out the earlier post of the Japanese Meet Up in the Gallery Sect, there's a yellow 8 been re-upholste to black-yellow which was similar to the concept 8 that didn't make into production.

I have a silver 8 as well and have thought about the two tone leather. Something like silver or light grey. I wonder how much that would cost? I would think quite a bit, dunno. How would they go about changing the color of the leather? Re-dye it or something?

A high-end upholsterer in NorCal quoted me $3k to redo all four seats to mimic the yellow prototype. $600 to redo the steering wheel.

$3000 for the interior alone? wow, that's about $2000 more than I was thinking of spending. Maybe it was just because yellow is such an uncommon color for leather? I see light gray leather everywhere, so hopefully that'll make it much less expensive.

Nope, it's because the leather is high quality ($1000 per hide) and labor is expensive ($65/hr). Color has nothing to do with it.

I wish I would have sucked it up and gotten the red/black interior. Yeah, it would have been the most optioned-out RX8 possible, but oh well. Now when I look at pics of red cars like mine w/ the red + black interior, it just kills me lol.

I had been thinking of getting leather done, although I don't like getting my butt burned, and I figured it would be $2k+...I wonder if I couldn't just get a shop to replace the light gray cloth inserts with red cloth? The visual effect would be about the same, black and red, only in fabric.

Has anyone done/seen blue leather? My 8 is blue and I'm toying around with the idea of getting black/blue leather interior.

I've seen blue leather used in custom interiors and from PUR NRG's post, it seems like any color is doable, as long as you're willing to spend the money.

Cloth seems good, but how about suede? Won't burn your butt, or freeze it in the winter and it's pretty grippy, not to mention it feels nice.

Nice find Eskimo, a hopefully cheaper alternative to re-upholstering the seats. I wonder if this place will create something for the RX-8 that will still allow for the Rotory Motif on each of the front seats to exposed.

I didn't see any RX8-specific references on their site, and I wasn't serious enough about it (yet ;-) to give them a call.

Been there, done that. I emailed Katskinz and one other company about aftermarket seats for the RX8. One never replied, the other said maybe in a few months.

For that it's worth Bascom Upholstery has negative things to say about Katskinz. They used to install them but stopped after dealing with too many quality control issues in the product.
