no, it wasn't and it was my bad for not digging deeper before getting ripped off for a $1000 program that I not only never got to use, but can't even sell to somebody else. At this point a bad guy thread is rather moot. I appreciate you providing me the opportunity to vent about it though.

dannobre, I have bricked my ECU 3 times. Each time it was my own fault for not turning the ignition off before disconnecting the brick. Again, having said that, a manual that detailed this and why would have gone a long way to avoiding this. I dont ee why it cost so much though, its a 30 min job at the dealer, hour at the most.

That said, what is this de-bricking process the AP has? I thought it was a "send your ecu in to Cobb" process, not an automated one.

 

The Ap has a recover feature that quite happily restores the ECU from what I understand. Never had to use it so I dont know first hand.

At the time you had Emanage , interceptor and Protuner . AP was only available if MM did your tuning .

Of those options PT at the time , was a good one if you wanted to self tune.

In fact right now ,if I was buying , for me it would still be a good option if it had any support from Mark . Because ATR is not available for down under models.

The Cobb AP started shipping March/2008. The Accesstuner Race program was released September/2008. There was a period when only Cobb or it's ProTuner network could tune the AP. MM is not the only when then, nor is he now. I tune my own car.

Again, those that are not in the position to tune their own AP and are using the PT system have my sympathy. I don't expect anyone to be sympathetic about my personal loss. I do expect you to see my posts b-tching about it any time the subject comes up though.

 

Obviously a timing thing - I know no-one used ATR for some time after it came out despite my egging people on to try it at the time.
If ATR was in fact available at the time you made your choice then you are quite correct in saying that you were an idiot to choose PT .

Like I said earlier, it was the short version without all the going into how retarded I was for leaping without thoroughly looking first. Pro Tuner is a great tool if you know how to build good maps.

Here in France we have someone that has taken time to improve the maps.

And the results are there :


Rx8 HP 231 stock , 50 to 150 km/h : average 11.8 to 12 seconds

Rx8 HP 231 decat + best PT v16 map , 50 to 150 km/h : 11 seconds to 9.7 seconds for the best with other mods (MSD + RB intake).


Rx8 SP 192 stock, 50 to 150 km/h : average 13 to 13.7 seconds

Rx8 SP 192 decat + best PT v16 map, 50 to 150 km/h : 12 to 11.8 seconds for the best with other mods (MSD + RB intake)


Don't take PT for what it is not, it is for people who know how to tune engine maps, or for the one's like most of us in France who know that person and have the chance that he enjoys improving the maps and sharing them with the community.

We don't know much about Cobb AP and so i will not make a judgement of it, looks good for you guys so no probs with that.

But don't deny what Mark has done with the Pro Tuner, because, again as an example, without the Pro Tuner, our little Rx-8 community in France could not have good maps for our tuned cars.

These numbers might have more relevance if you stated what the tire OD, the rear gear is, and what gear it was in at the beginning of the timing.

Yes I have tried to purchase Accesstuner RACE or Pro for EUDM cars through Cobb but the answer is no. MM is the only one that have license for it.

So in fact there is NO other solution for us without an USDM RX-8

 

all tests on 2nd gear, rear gear 4.44 (i did not mention my time for example, best of 192 because 4.77 et 6 gear mods).

by buying a Hymee Pro Tuner at 1000 australian dollars , you will be able to do what you want in terms of map tuning, of course if you have all the knowledge to do so.

the only "restriction" i would say, is to get hold of Mark from Hymee who is not always responding, but is a trustworthy vendor.

There is another option.

MMCFlash can flash most Mazda/Denso ecus. I believe it can also correct the checksum on Series 1s. If anyone is actually interested, they should probably contact either Evoscan or the author directly. There is an English subforum, though his site is mainly in Russian.

You would also need a J2534 cable, and the company that makes the cheapest one also has some pretty nice software for tuning, Ecuflash.

The caveat is that you would need to produce an XML definition of the rom yourself. There is software which makes this reasonably easy, provided you already have already have a background in computer science. ScoobyRom will detect nearly all of the tables in any RX8 rom, it is made for Subaru's, but Denso lays out the maps the same for Mazda and Subaru. For example, it detects most everything in this 2010 rom.



It is best if you also have, and can use, IDA Pro.

TL;DR There are other options if your ecu is unsupported, but you need to be a geek.

Its at best an beta software with loads of bugs, but thats all I have so I use it.

Hymee stopped responding to me for over a year, I wrote an long list of bugs that I have found while using it, asking him to take a look at it but since then I guess my mails goes directly to the delete folder... :-/
