NA Runs Rich

I have a 04 rx8 with 8,000 miles on the engine. My upgrades are Black Halo Racing ignition kit, K&N intake, Greddy catback exhaust, and Cobb accessport.
My question is when I data log a 3,000 to 9,000 pull in any gear, my afr runs rich. I have seen it jump to 10.1. Usually in higher rpms its between 11 to 10. Maybe its a rotary thing but that to me is to rich. I would imagine more power could be pulled at about 12 to 12.5/1. I know that running a little rich keeps exhaust gases cool and can cool off the engine as well but I checked my spark plugs yesterday and after six months of life they look crappy. They look like the engine is way too rich causing my plugs to die too early. Anyway I have searched through many forums and haven't seen anything for NA engines.

You haven't searched enough. In North America, the stock fuel tables call for a very rich mixture at high rpm/load, in the 9:1s. The range of the stock ECU is ~11-20:1, are you sure you see 10s? Most seem to agree that 13.0-13.5:1 is best for the Renesis at WOT.

There are numerous ways to achieve this with the Accessport on the OE ecu.

Download AccessTuner Race from Cobb and teach yourself. Expect to invest anything from 40 to several thousand hours in this process, and at a minimum a couple hundred dollars in gas. It just depends on your goals and aptitude. If you have strong knowledge in engine calibration, computer-assisted statistics, embedded systems architecture, or related fields, you may find it relatively simple.

However, most owners have little experience in those fields. For them the best option to to pay for a professional calibration. I had this done by Jeff Abrams, see mazdamaniac.com. I think you will be overwhelmed by the quality of his calibrations.

Though I was pleased with the calibration I got from Jeff, I decided to learn how to tune, because though I've never done so before, I have applicable experience as a hobbyist, student, and professional. I felt up to the task, and furthermore, I found, as I haven't let anyone work on my cars in any capacity in 15 years, that running a pro tune made my skin itch.

Kane is working on software that will simplify calibration, it is to be released this summer. Most other cars with ecu recalibration tools also have other utilities to assist with recalibration. Unfortunately, the RX8 was a limited commercial success, and we are lucky to have any tuning options at all. What we do have is relatively limited compared to what is available for cars with larger tuning communities. This is further confounded by the complexity of the Renesis' engine control systems, and the difficulty of modifying the engine.

There are probably 50x as many people putting cams in their LS2, or increasing boost on their WRX as there are modding RX8s. Likewise, there is 50x the level of support and resources.

What if my 2009 rx8 s running to Lean? I have a racebeat header, high flow American made cat, single exhaust, and a k&n typhoon. I just ordered a stage two gforce performance chip. And its a preprogrammed chip with an accessport. Dynocomp is Going to look at her after I get the chip on.

Don't put that crappy chip on your car. If the airfilter is a typhoon type then throw it in the garbage bin as well. It can really alter your ltft\stft given how it is made.

Return that chip. You just paid $70 for a $0.005 resistor.
