Maybe a dumb question... (regarding octane rating)

before i begin tuning with the CZ...i just had to ask this question.
i'm running on 87 octane gas. i used to fill up with 91 but somewhere in this forum i read a thread by the guy who's selling the interceptor-x as well as a comment by rotarygod that in NA form, rotaries like lower octane fuel.

the used cz that i bought is tuned with 93 octane.
although i was kinda hoping that i can use the old map and make adjustments from there.....i guess i'll need to start from scratch.
my question is...do i stick with 87 or upgrade to 91 before i start tuning?

oh...one more thing to ask.
in this link, http://tyrannical.org/page-15, your told to do a run in 2nd gear
but in this link, https://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php...&postcount=319, your told to do it in 3rd gear.
which gear do i use?
or do i have to make sepepate loggings in different gears? and make seperate tunes for each gear?
sorry for asking many things at once. thanks.

You have to ask yourselves which octane you will be using after tuning is done.

I have a hard time believing that the rotary likes low octane fuel more than high octane. I always fill mine with 95 octane for now but i know people who have dynoed up 10-15 hp more by filling up with 99 octane. Which just happens to be the fuel im switching to very soon :-) This was of course a totally stock RX-8.

By the way im in Sweden so we have a bit different types of fuel than in North America. Our fuels go from 95 to 99 octane, hence im a cheapskate at the moment fueling up with 95.

Higher Octane means the fuel can be compressed more without igniting. If you use a lower octane fuel than specified, you risk the possibility of pre-ignition which could damage your engine and decrease horsepower. With a 4-stroke engine you can bend your valves and such, but I'm not sure how a rotary holds up to too low of octane fuel.

Then you get the highest octane and tuned the CZ with the most agressive settings without detonating.

which gear do i use?
The higher the gear, the more detail you will see in your graphs. I used second because I was on the street, if you can hit 90, use third.

Well of course. I'm just talking about a factory engine without tuning.

i think i was trying to make sure whether rotaries make MORE power with LOWER OCTANE or not, because that's what i remember reading somewhere in this forum. If this was a honda, i wouldn't even be asking this question.

btw,
how do i know whether the engine is knocking or not from a certain tune with a certain octane? can the CZ track that as well?
