Laptops and Tuning

I am in the market to buy a laptop. From what I gather I don't nessecarily need a laptop to tune my car. I could just use a regular desktop computer but a laptop makes it so much easier.

1. Can just about any laptop work?

2. From what I've read it appears you connect the laptop to the dongle and dongle into the piggyback computer?

3. Unless its the COBB AP then you dont even need a laptop?

4. Does a dongle usually come with the piggyback computer or do you have to buy that seperate?

5. Software comes with whatever aftermarket computer you get?

6. Please flame me for I'm sure these are rookie questions. I like it hot.

1- any laptop should work, if it runs an OS that is compatible with the tuning equipment and software you are using.
2- don't buy a piggyback unit. Buy an ECU replacement or an AccessPort or other flashing device.
3- No you don't need a laptop with the Cobb.
4- Don't buy a piggyback.
5- Software comes with the hardware. Most software is Windows compatible...so that's a good bet. Hopefully you're not going to decide which OS to use, though, based solely on a possible purchase of tuning software.
6- These are rookie questions. SEARCH! The only possible reason I'm writing all this out is because I'm a sucker and I'm bored at work.

Using a desktop would be extremely cumbersome and wouldn't allow you to road tune the car.

1. Can just about any laptop work?
A:Any modern computer, built in the last 3 or 4 years, should work.

2. From what I've read it appears you connect the laptop to the dongle and dongle into the piggyback computer?
A:True

3. Unless its the COBB AP then you dont even need a laptop?
A:Mostly True

4. Does a dongle usually come with the piggyback computer or do you have to buy that seperate?
A:It does come with a dongle.

5. Software comes with whatever aftermarket computer you get?
A:Hymee is creating software that will allow you to tune a car with your computer. It is computable with Windows computers.

6. Please flame me for I'm sure these are rookie questions. I like it hot.

Thanks elysium19. That's what I need to know. I've never did any tuning before, and I've read the Cobb AP posts and interceptor X threads but it leads me to assume a lot of things.

alnielsen - in addition to doing some reading I searched for "latops to use for tuning" the results - Bay Area Nor Cal Community chat thread, Lelong Lelon Singapore, The little things, St louis 8 owners, etc etc. Nothing about whether I need a laptop, and or which one, for aftermarket tuning.

If someone comes up to you on the street and asks a simple question of "what time is it" I'm guessing you say "SEARCH" theres plenty of stores and houses you could knock on there door and ask them." "the answer is out there"

I would just give them the time instead. And you're a moderator?
