Your test pipe was probably a homemade midpipe. Made of mild steel. The RB unit, along with others for the RX8, are made of stainless steel.
MazdaManiac's AP will be set to mask any O2 sensor CEL's.

I can't give a precise Hp increase range (awaiting a fairly stock MazdaManiac AP tune myself), but yes it could be thought of as an "install and forget it tune." It's quite precise actually given that you provide idle and at speed data logs of key parameters as a baseline and then can re-tune upon additional modifications.
btw: it's pretty amazing all of the sensors that exist in the '8 and are being tracked by the ECU, and you can therefore use the AP, but I would still recommend gauges for the critical readouts. The Racing Beat gauge pod is a recommended addition (oil temp/pressure and coolant temp) and nicely takes the place of the useless cigar lighter recess.

I use to know a Kim from Mtka. Mn./Chaska
Your not going to get big torque gains unless you go FI.
The RB intake with duct gets good torque gain and the AP will help too, but your not going to get anywhere near 20 or more torque without FI.
If you really don't want to Mod and worry about the warrenty then......
just go K&N drop in filter plus AP from MM.
You will not get away with a Midpipe in Mn.
They pull you over for everything. I was up there at Christmas and the cops are so bored they pull you over for having a tassel hanging frm the rearview mirror.

The reason for the price difference is it is dual resonated. The rotary engine puts out exhaust gasses that are extremely hot and loud (in comparison to piston engines). The resonators not only handle that heat, but also quiet the exhaust.

Is the resonated mid pipe actually quiet at 3500rpms at cruise?
