ECU tuning theory
ECU tuning theory
In consideration of my purchase of the CZ unit I would like to study up on ECU tuning. I understand what is going on at a basic level, but want more details. The kind of details which will give me the capability to do a self study. If any one knows of any sites that can teach me please let me know. It does not have to be rotary specific. Alot of good infomation can be found in these forums but I want to get by all the flames and double posts and corrections that are inherrant to a public forum.
In another question has anyone considered porting the e-manage software to Palm OS? I for one don't carry a laptop and find a hand held device much more convenient. I could do the port but would need access to the source code. I guess I could reverse engineer it by watching how the maps are put out on the wire but that sounds like to much ...

Sorry Buck but it doesn't work that way. Even if people did start posting information in this thread what makes you think it will be immune from "all the flames and double posts and corrections that are inherrant (sic) to a public forum"?
My suggestion is do a search for a couple posts Omicron made regarding tuning a CZ unit. That's the best source of info you'll find on this forum.

Also by MazdaManiac or Maniac. He has done some extensive ECU tuning of his own. I am also on the stage of learning it myself, but you have read more and research more to get what you are looking for. Also use google to find articles or projects that have to do with ECU tuning.

All I asked for was a link.

For example rotaryengineillustrated.com is well done with great cut outs and animations.
How about a FAQ or guide to using eManage. Maybe I am not being clear enough about what I need.
Actually I noticed this is a double thread sorta, as I noticed another looking for similiar advice on how to get started with ECU tuning.

If you've read many of my posts then you'll notice a common pet peeve of mine: people who either don't know or don't bother to search the forum for answers to their questions. This is a pet peeve and I don't pretend it's a social grace. If you had prefaced your request with a "I searched the forums but couldn't find an answer" then I would have responded differently. Chalk this up to a misunderstanding or misscommunication.

one question about the emanage and canzoomer unit someone posted that when your tuning the canzoomer unit - means adding and + means your taking away from the the car.why is that so? does the emanage work the same way? for some reason i find tuning shops are afraid of tuning the canzoomer unit is it the same. maybe rotary god or rx8 friend can give us some information.
There's a ton of good info and files on the Yahoo Group E-manage. I am a member there and MazdaManiac uploaded useful files for the RX-8 there. Here's a link:

I'll tell you what my base rotary maps generally look like when I tune one. I haven't played with a Renesis yet but it shouldn't be any different. While I can't give you actual numerical values to enter in the ecu, I can tell you what my overall base map goals are. This all assumes you have a wideband O2 sensor. A dyno helps too but isn't mandatory. Awideband isn't mandatory either but it really helps.
On the 13B engines I have always started with a fixed timing split of 10 degrees. The trailing is always 10 degrees less than the leading. I advance the leading to a max of 25 degrees by 4000 rpm and hold it there to redline. At idle the leading timing is a zero and then tapers up linearly to max advance at 4K. This is a simple base timing setup. With a wideband I try to shoot for an a/f ratio of about 13.5:1 across the board. This again is also just a general base setup. Idle may not necessarily be at this a/f ratio though. Play with it until it idles smooth, then move on. I try to get this as close as possible. From there I go back and adjust timing split in relation to rpm and load. I will also play with richening or leaning out the mixture the same way. Don't think this is a fast process. It isn't. The car should run decent on the base setup. After some playing you'll learn what works good and what doesn't. Just remember to only make one change at a time.
BTW: Asking others IS doing homework on a topic. Just think of it as tutoring.
