CZ-MidP4 (hf cat + resonator) and a CEL

I've put my CZ-MidP4 back on the car and have had 3 CELs since. I reset the PCM, then 3-5 days later it comes on again, under varying driving conditions. I plan to get with Maurice when he gets back from vacation, but in the mean time am wondering if anyone else with the MidP4 has experienced this?

Dave/RX8Friend, do you have any ideas?

I have the same setup, but without Canzoomer's computer with no problems.

Is it due to oxygen sensor readings?

Omi,

I've been getting CEL's too. Often under WOT. After a while it goes away then comes back again.

I'm wondering if it's map related... I've got a new map (not mine) that runs strong, but maybe that's it. I plan to go back to my custom map this weekend and see if that helps. First I gotta get off my lazy a$$ and hook up the CanScan to see what code I'm throwing.

Also found out today that Maurice cancelled/postponed his vacation because he's too busy to get away right now. So hopefully I can get him on the phone tomorrow.

Omi, I've never had a CEL with my CZ, cat, and midp4. Maybe it's that thin mountain air.

Hey, I just started getting them on Saturday -- one then and one today. I had thought Omi's were indeed due to his altitude, etc., and his cutting-edge tuning (whereas I am striclty plug / play) but maybe not -- my conditions couldn't me more different -- close to sea level, very hot, and VERY humid. Hey Omi, how has the humidity been there when you've gotten the CELs?

Of late, unusually high for the area. 30-40% or so.

Based on what I am seeing from these postings, I am firmly convinced that it is the Canzoomer ECU that is setting off the codes. I have the midpipe setup only with no problems. Checking with my canscan shows that I can't go any leaner. I know of one other car with the same setup as mine and it also has no code problems.

This may be so, but we should be careful about generalizing. There are now 3-4 different CZ "flashes," all designed as "stage 1" for the M Flash, plus some custom-tuning. Neither Omi nor I is running the more generic version that was released in May; we both have tried later stuff. For the moment I have turned off the CZ unit (it is easier than pulling the exhaust!). If CEL stays off, but comes back on when the CZ is switched on, next step could be to go back to the "May" CZ flash, which for a couple of months never caused any problems at all.

It's also possible, of course, that there's been some change in the engine components related to heat / cooling issues that have nothing to do with the CZ unit but which could now cause the engine to react differently to it. But I'm no engineer ....

Shebam:

Neither am I. As I said, from my readings if I put the CZ back on the AF mixture would be even leaner and with just the mid section changes I am about as lean at various rpm and loads as I want to be. No codes. To get more power, I am going the supercharger route as my car will be Pettit Racings second test vehicle as soon as they can build the next group of prototypes. At 4 to 6 pounds of boast, bigger injectors and a good fuel mapping their car is running great. Thats a different thread so I will stop here. I had one code problem during the 4 days of running with both the CZ and midpipe setup and once I took off the CZ I haven't had a problem since.

Hey, the closer FI gets to the East Coast, the more interested I become. I haven't been following those threads closely; maybe I need to start.

Well so much for my scientific plan re the CZ box. The CEL came back today just 10 miles after I cleared it and switched off the CZ box. No CEL for the 9.5 mile drive into work this morning. But tonight came on after .5 miles -- almost the same place it came on last night on the same trip! This time, however, no rain and not as humid.

Nothing more to switch off .... Will drive for a while and see what happens.

Actually, in light of RX-8 Friend's post at:
https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...429#post472405
just pulled the CZ unit until Maurice makes his post (whether it not it turns out to address my current batch of CELs).

No CELs since I pulled the CZ-1 unit week and a half ago. (Also much less response above 6K RPM.)

Finally got around to getting my CanScan plugged in and to pull the codes I was getting. I also unistalled my CZ box pending the diode/cap mod I need to do. Car definitely doesn't run as strong without it - tires will barely break loose going from 2nd to third, and there is no way they will from 3rd to 4th.

Anyway, without further ado, here were my codes. I'll send them to Maurice tomorrow.

ECU #= 10
Mil is ON
Vehicle reports 1 stored trouble code(s)
TCI - P0420
-P0420 Catalyst system efficiency below threashold (bank 1)
Pending code 1 - P0004 -- Fuel volume regulator control circuit high
Pending code 2 - P2000 -- NOx trap efficiency below threashold (bank 1)
After I pulled the CZ unit I drove the car a couple of miles and had no trouble codes when I returned. No idea what this means, but I suspect it may be CZ map related. We'll see what Maurice says.

Omi,

I pull the same codes, and i am not running a CZ unit yet since my &*($*&% unit has not arrived yet (ordered in march). The good side of what I am going to tell you is this, I run a RP midpipe modded with a 4" cat. Very similar to what you are running. I had to use the casper O2 fooler to get that mil to stop coming back. So I doubt it is your CZ unit kicking off the alarm. Also, I burned through my first cat pretty quick and the one thing I can say is that I think any CAT we hook up to this beast of a car is going to lose efficiency pretty quickly as we toast the hell out of it... I mean look at how large the stock one is, and then we go and replace it with a cat 1/4 - 1/3 of its size? Anyways just my 2c and wanted to let you know that its probably not your CZ unit.

Yep, I think you're right. In fact, I know you're right, as I pulled my CZ unit prior to upgrading it with caps/diodes, and about 20 miles later, I got the CEL again. Hmmmm...

so basically what your saying is if we run just the CZ-MidP4 and aftermarket exhaust w/out the casper unit (no piggyback ECU) we're gonna pop the CEL, right?

...dammit

On the other hand, my CELs stopped as soon as I pulled the CZ unit (which has not yet had the diode upgrade) a couple of weeks ago and have not come back. But I don't know the codes. I am NOT in the blame-CZ school at all. Just reporting data.
