Anyway to have a Car-PC AccessPort?

Basically I would like an AP, but I don't want to spend 500+ dollars on something I could do for less.

I have an extra laptop lying around, and my dad's company manufactures OBD II - USB cables, so I was hoping there was a way to make a DIY access port, and download maps from Cobb or other sites.

I know a buddy of mine has a setup like this for his evo, and I was wondering (and hoping) that I could do the same with my RX-8.

Anyone know if this is possible?

Also, what are the effects on the warranty if I do something like this?

downloading maps form other sites where it's not tuned for your car can be dangerous.

Plus it can be in violation of the programer.

Then again if they made the map and distribute it free....

Downloader beware............

Well I was looking on Cobb's site and they had maps for the RX8. Not sure if I could download with the link, but it seemed like it.

Would be cool if the AccessTuner would have a simulator mode that actually worked as an AP

Be cool if Cobb made a nice piece of software that looked for a supported J2534 connector and appropriate drivers. Probably wouldn't be hard, then they could sell the software at a discount price from what it goes for now and allow ppl to use in-car computers or NetBooks and the such to tune and log with. Heck they could even separate out the Flasher from the tuning software and offer a-la carte packages. Just a thought, tho doubtful it would ever happen.

The AP software can log directly through the dongle without the AP and display on the virtual dashboard.
The newest version AP doesn't have a dongle, so you log in pass-through.
The AP for other makes/models does have live tuning. We got screwed on that capability.
The Hymee doesn't do it either. It is a limitation of the PCM itself.
Normally, you write new mapping in redirected emulation in a "spare" area of RAM in the PCM and then flash it to PROM once you are satisfied with the tune.
We can't do that.

Cobb OTS maps suck.

Custom maps won't work on any other car than the one they were created for.
