Nice bump. having a fan on your oil cooler does nothing. We tested this locally with proper Spal fan setup and it basically does nothing to further lower temps with the fan on.

I also have a secondary radiator that works well and fan on it does nothing to lower temp either. They are just too restrictive at speed so they are counterproductive. Honestly, the factory oil coolers work very well and there is little to improve on, the only drawback is that the thermostats in them are not ideal.

could you offer more info?

I monitor my oil temps

I installed a small motorcycle fan on the secondary oil cooler, for cruising and driving around with the fan off I did not see any difference.

I returned home let the car idle and allowed the oil temps to climb to 200 degrees, this would be equivalent to being stuck in traffic on a 92 degree day for 10min. I turned on the fan and observed the oil temps decrease by 5 degree's almost instantly. satisfied I turned the car off.

my next test is to wire the fan directly to the radiator fans and run the stuck in traffic test and see if it will maintain a reasonable tempreature.

I wonder if we can get lower thermostates?

I would bet being actually stuck in traffic would be much worse. The hot exhaust from car ahead of you. the often moving 5 feet at a time and the radiant heat from the road.
With the thermostat's in the oil coolers it would be imposable to tell if only one is open or both. The drop in temp could have been caused by one opening before another. Also where the placement of your actual temp sensor could make a huge difference. .

A guy could remove the stock thermostat units and run a single aftermarket one.

Idling in your driveway is not the same as sitting in traffic. The tests we did were/are on a NA RX-8 (stock bumper) and we see (it's still installed on the car) no drop in temps with the fan on, and there is even a hole cut the size of the fan in the splash shield. With better ducting and re routing, a fan may work though in a different location.

Now on mine, I have custom lines, more powerful radiator fans, 180F oil thermostat, and a center mount second oil cooler and my oil temps drop at idle and stay right around 180F even when idling in 100F weather. Coolant temps at idle in 100F weather generally sit around 195F.

Oil temps rise quickly under boost in the upper rev range but drop equally as quick when cruising under low load, at decent speeds.

What I have found recently though is that when I am driving around fairly aggressive and ambient temps are in the 120F heat index range, my system exceeds its efficiency range and I will see coolant temps around 212F-220F when driving hard and they will remain there under cruise for a while. This is just because everything becomes heat soaked and the only way to get temps back to normal is with a nice long low load (no hills) cruise or a complete shutdown.

Maybe I am getting overly parinoid. I haven't seen anything above 200. Just worried to sit in hot traffic and be powerless to do anything.
