DIY: Mazda Zoom Power Engine Cleaner (Engine Cleaning, Seaform)
I just did this to my 8. It smoked so much I couldn't see anything but white in my windows. My neighbors have a tendency to call the police on anything. Next thing I know they've called the fire department. Smells horrible and I'm now getting a CEL. Any ideas as to why?
real quick question, after the seafoam sit for about an 1 hours, it said reconnect everything, then it said 2-stoke oil, wouldnt a cel come on and notice your pour something in? especially since you would have the car running also?
you could get a CEL for any number of reasons after seafoaming. You would need to read the actual code to determine root cause. Most times it's a lean or rich condition thrown by the O2 sensor.... some times its the ESS complaining because it was disconnected.
The 2 stroke procedure is to provide sufficient lube on first crank post seafoaming. The shop manual calls for cranking up the OMP flow rate and I believe this was one person's means of doing the same without having access to the OE OMP table.

Just curious on something here... I recently cleaned my engine with the zoon cleaner, and everything went well... However, on the TSB in post #13 it mentions reconnecting the secondary air injection plug AFTER you run it.. I put everything back during the "sit & wait" phase, and then just fired her up...
For future reference, should I be leaving that plug OFF during the first startup as it mentions in the TSB post? Or does it really matter?

And not do anything before it evaporated. Take a dirty spark plug and soak it in seafoam for 24hrs, then see how much carbon has actually been removed. Pretty much nothing. You will get a fim of faint carbon on the surface of the liquid and a bit on the bottom of the container, but there will still be most of the carbon on the plugs, and what is on there won't be any easier to remove.
Decarb chemicals works best when it is applied under pressure or a dramatic temperature difference (such as really cold coming from an aerosol can, or really hot if it is atomized and compressed). And when you are heating it up through compression, distilled water works just as well as seafoam, but costs 100 times less.

Thanks. This was helpful.
I used it as a hail mary for bad compression, along with Automatic Transmission fluid trick (first). It smoked away and worked as described. However, it did not work as a hail mary, meaning I have bad apex seals, but I knew I was working on bad engine.

Hey NY what is more affective, doing the seafoam thing through the nipples after driving it and warming it up and letting it sit for 2 hours or would it be better to put it in the spark plug holes and let it sit after cranking it a few times over night?
Letting seafoam sit inside the engine doesn't do anything, regardless of hot or cold. I tested several decarb methods and borescoped the rotors to take pictures of carbon removal, and letting seafoam sit in the engine is the only one that has zero change before vs after. You can even see this yourself by pulling your plugs and letting them soak in seafoam for a few hours. There will be a faint residue of carbon floating on the surface, but noticeable carbon removal from the plugs. Seafoam needs to be very hot or pressurized in order to produce any results.
In order to get any benefit from the seafoam, you have to have it ingested while the engine is running, which heats up the seafoam as it ignites in the combustion. BUT, if you ingest it when the engine is running, then you might as well use distilled water. Distilled water flashes to steam and steam cleans just as effectively as seafoam does when ingested, while costing 80 times less per oz.

I will try the distilled water soon. But I am having a problem with my engine not sucking up the liquid. Last time I seafoamed my car I put the seafoam in a bowl and let it suck up the liquid while a friend cranked the engine. This time it did not want to suck up anything so I resorted to using a spray bottle to get the seafoam in there. Any ideas on why my engine wouldn't take in the seafoam?
Also for the distilled water how much should I use? I'm guessing it is going to be more than a few ounces.
