The trick is to put a couple ice cubes in your extra bottle of oil and put it in a coobie before sticking it in the engine bay ;-)

Us FC owners have handy in-floor storage boxes, which are lockable. That's where I keep two quarts of oil, extra pair of boots, emergency car magazine, basic socket set, duct tape, umbrella, haynes manual, owners manual, cd cases and my collapsible windshield shades.

And still, I have a nice, empty hatch to stuff other crap in. Brilliant!

I've been doing this for about 9 months now. No problems, nothing's melted. So far.

How about what i do. I buckle it in with the spare tire inflator. just adjust the strap til it fits the quart snug so it won't move anywhere..

I've done this on every vehicle I've ever owned with no problem. The bottle I have under the hood of my 8 now has been there since i bought the car in April or May and I refill it from a 5 quart bulk bottle. I'll replace it with a new 1 quart bottle once it starts to look haggard.

I have been reading this for over a year, is this really necessary? I only go through about 1/2 quart every 1000 miles. How long will someone be away from a quart of oil?

There are places that don't carry 5-20 and I can be at times an hour away from some place that does. But if you are doing OK on oil, take a year off from reading this thread.

this is an old thead haha, i think its not worth the risk, like codyred said put in that strap that holds the spare tire inflator or find a spot in the trunk, i think its retarded to put a bottle full of messy engine oil that comes in thin plastic containers in an enginebay that can get hot...very hot...

ahhh yes most recommended ... i start reading and get pissed that the thread is like 3-4 yrs old... and hope there is some sort of useful info thrown in somewhere, but to no avail and 12 pages later, just end up with burnt retinas and less time. touche'

a lot of the 1st Gen Neon guys would make fun of their hard-right-turn oil pickup problems and always carry a spare quart at autocross events.. one guy had a quart duct taped to his antenna with a clear hose going to his breather as an IV-drip !!!!

I've had a quart of castrol GTX in that location since I bought the car. It's just handy. Perfectly safe as long as you tighten the cap on your oil. People who are worried about melting are silly. I suppose it could leak though and make a huge mess if you left the cap off the bottle and rolled the car over

I just carry a gallon in the back seat. Along with my liter of gas premix.

If I'm going out with friends that will occupy the back seat I'll just take it out for the night.
