I recently bought a 2005 remote for my 2004 off of ebay. I have now had 3 2004 remotes go bad on me.

Question on cutting the key. I went to Lowe's and the guys said he wouldnt do it since the key has a transponder and their cutter does not work for keys that have a transponder. He said even if he did cut it the car wouldn't start. Does that make sense?

Second I went to Ace (Pleasants) and they do not cut keys brought in from the outside only theirs, but they do cut keys with transponders.

The only other option is a specialty locksmith, but I was trying to avoid spending a lot of money just to cut a key.

Does anyone have any recommendations or if the Lowe's comment makes sense? .

Thanks

The Lowes guy is right, the car will not start even if they cut it because the chip has to be programmed to work with your car. However, it is probably bullshit when he said their cutter doesn't work with transponders because cutting the key has nothing to do with the transponder which is on the inside of the key head.

I only have one key, and my dealer charges $95 to have the key cut and programmed so I'm just going to order a 2005 key from ebay and take it to a specialty locksmith to have it cut and see if he can program it.

Thanks.

I do have 2 other keys (required to "program" the 3rd key based on the procedure per the instructions at the beginning of the thread), does the locksmith or Mazda need to do anything special to cut the key or are do you only have 1 key and that is why you need it to be programmed?

Sorry, I am new at this key stuff.

Thanks.

Whoever just cuts the key to match the shape that is needed to fit into your car's locks/ignition.

I only have one working key, which is why I have to go to the dealer or a locksmith to get my 05 key to work on my 04 or just get a second to if they say they can't program that one so I can do it myself.

Anyone can cut the key, but if they screw it up, you're out the cost of the key. That's why some places won't touch expense keys like this. Programming the key is easy - if you got a compatible fob.

Ok, thanks. So what is the concern with going to a place that can handle transponders if they are just cutting the key like any other lock? The procedure with the other 2 mazda keys handles that right?

It seems that most have not had an issue with the key not being cut correctly, or am I off there.

Thanks again.

I had issues with getting mine cut. Tried twice (two blanks, two different places) and neither key works in the door. The second key works in the ignition fine though, so I just deal with it and hope my remote battery doesn't suddenly die.

Ok, thanks everyone.

I spoke with Mazda and they said they cut the key for free but it is $95 to program. If I have 2 original keys, I can just program using the procedure at the beginning of this thread right? I do not need them to program the key, but only to cut it, correct?

Sorry, if I missed this in this long thread, but seems to be a bit confusing.

Thanks.

Yeah that' correct. And you'll also need to follow a set of different instructions to program the remote.

Ok, thanks.

I have programmed the remote in the past no problems. I was just not following the process for programming the key.

I will head off to get my new remote/flip key cut for free at Mazda and see if I can program it myself with my other 2 keys.

I programmed my own key/fob, and had the dealer cut the key. Like someone else said, my dealer didn't charge for the cut. However, they cut it with one of my other keys and it didn't work, so they cut a new key (no charge) using the code tag from my original key set and it worked fine.

Which key did you program yourself, the switchblade style?

Yes. The key and the remote portion are done separately. I've also done my daughter's Mazda 3 - just a key - similar procedure.

I'm in a bit of a dilemma here. I talked to the dealership about them cutting and programming my switchblade key since I only have one key and they will still charge me the $95 even if they try and claim it can't be programmed.

So should I purchased a normal 04 key from them and have it programmed and then just code the 05 key myself or what? Instead of buying the $60 04 key from the dealer is there a site that sells genuine replacement keys? I found this one but it says it can be made as a duplicate of my original key rather than it's own.

If the dealer could guarantee you that the 04 key will be programmed. See if you could get charged less if you ask for a Valet Key replacement. I haven't done it myself, but there's a few who have had the dealer cut the blade free of charge and programmed the switch blade with their pre-existing two keys. To get an accurate duplicate, you would have to provide the cutter your VIN, that what the dealer would do. Nevertheless, read the fine print regarding exchange/returns if the duplicate from that site doesn't work.

You will need to take it to the dealer to be programmed since you now only have one key.

Same situation that I am in. I took it to the dealer and they tried cutting it to match my current key and they fucked up so now I'm stuck waiting to receive the couple blanks I ordered online.

I went to Ace and had them create a new key for me for $75 instead of the dealer's $95 so now when I get my new blanks in and take them to Ace to get cut I can program my own key rather than going to the dealership to do it for such a high fee.

Unhappy RX8 Remote key Fob programming issue

Hello,

I have purchased a used RX8 MIATA key keyless remote KPU41788 control for my 2005 Mazda RX8:

I tried programing the key last night, I followed the steps below:

Remote Programming
• Ensure that all doors, trunk, and hood are closed,
• open the driver’s door
Carry out the operation below within 24 seconds:
• Insert key
• Turn ignition to the run position and off, 3 times (on-off, on-off, on-off)
• Leave key in ignition (off position, not lock or on)
• Push door switch, 3 times (The door switch is the little rubber one on the jamb of the rear door next to your elbow when sitting in the driver’s seat, which controls the interior lights.)
• Car will lock, then unlock automatically after pressing the door switch 3 times

All the above steps went well but nothing happened while trying the next step (below):

while the car is in unlock mode, Push 'Lock' on your newly acquired remote 2 times

Please advise what could be the problem? will I have to change the remote battery or something?

Please advise

You should be able to program it. My used FOB was from a Mazda3. If it's low in battery, the LED indicator between the "lock" and "unlock" button should light up. What year is your RX-8?

You seem to be on the right track following the "Security and Locks" procedure, also make sure your trunk isn't open while performing this.

I am also having this same problem. Could it be the receiver or would the procedure even start with a bad receiver. I get to the point where you "press any button on the remote twice." I do this, but the doors don't lock and unlock as stated in the instructions. I have both my original and a new remote. Thanks in advance. Btw sorry for the thread revival. Lol

When I was looking for mine in eBay, there were a few that only had three(missing the trunk button). I don't know if that's what you bought and if it matters when programming for the RX-8.

I don't remember the number off hand but it matched the factory remote exactly.

Oh boy, you didn't get the switch blade? Because if you bought the same 2004 FOB, you would have the dealer reprogram it completely.
