I have an 2004 and my switch blade key and remote programed/worked no problem...maybe 2 mins tops. You need to have two original keys....not one.....TWO!!!

Programing your key:

Use Key 1, turn to ON, wait till the key icon disappears and count 2 secs..

Quick.. pop in Key 2, turn to ON... wait till the key icon disappears, count to 2..

Quick!! Slam in the new rotary key, turn to ON, and voila!!! If the icon disappears, your key is CODED!!

FOB Programing:

Ignition On/Off, 3 times,
Push door switch (the button on the inside of your door well where the car door latches/button that turns off your dome lights when the door is shut), 3times,
- Car will lock, then unlock-
Push "Lock" on remote, 2 times,
Push "Unlock", 2 times,
Push Trunk button, 2 times,

Now all 3 are accepted by the car.

just did this to my 04,

i bought the key/remote on ebay, came real fast.
Took me awhile to find somewhere to get it cut.
Walmart, Lowes, Home Depot all said they couldn't cut keys with chips.
ACE Hardware cut it for $2, with no guarantees.
Programmed key and the remote real fast and easy, with 1 key n 1 valet key.

But.. i bought the wrong key off ebay, the one w/o the trunk button
also the key turns rough in the ignition, but it starts.
oh yea and the trunk won't open with the key, which sucks even more!

I had my key cut by Walmart (the guy did it for free,) didn't work in the doors, dunno about the trunk and only worked one way in the ignition.
Got a new key cut at the local hardware store, and replaced the key in the switchblade (involved dremel, drill, file, etc,) and that one works in the ignition fine, but still doesn't work in the door.
I dunno if Mazda's key tolerances are really tight, or we just have really bad luck.

(dont go to home depot...). i also did the keyless entry transmitter programming myself. very easy! it opens the trunk too! (instructions also fr Takashi). thanks alot!

I have the same problem. The key will start the car and is ok, but the FOB doesn't lock/unlock.

The FCC ID of the new remote is 41788, my old one is 41847, I'm suspecting that is the problem.

EDIT: Got a fob from an MPS6 FCC ID: 41521...this works, just programmed it. It doesn't have trunk release though unfortunately

What you have to remember is the following..

Australian and European (OEM) switch blade keys are different (transmitter wise) than the US ones...and those non genuine sold on eBay.

The reason why the buttons do not unlock trunk (boot) and unlock doors is to do with the OEM immobilizer - receiver control unit(s) made to work together with the OEM Switch Blade coded keys.

Genuine Receiver and Transmitter are specific model code for RX-8...

Example...for 2008 S2 RX-8 (Australia and Europe)

FF49-67-5RY Transmitter (lock ,unlock, trunk buttons) under separate sold Silver swivel Key.
FFY9-67-5DZ Module Receiver/Immobilizer Unit under Passenger Dash. (RHD)

Series 1 there are around 3 different Receiver Module Units depending on year.

Switch Blade type key blanks were used from 1st July 2004 production (G2YA-76-2GXB)

which key do you use for the FOB programming (ignition part). one of the two originals or the new (3rd) key you just programmed?

Sure, it will work fine with one key, though you may have some difficulty when the directions say 'insert SECOND key' because you don't have one.

bought the switch blade key off ebay for $38. and got my key cut at a local key shop for $3. so total $41 dollar vs $400+ that dealer asking for.

thanks for all the info. the encoding and the remote program works like a charm. got it working all in one try.

I completed a recode on a "Deal extreme" key - worked like a charm and managed to get another switchblade unit but could not make the remote entry work which sucks (Off a Mazda 6) Just refused to accept it sigh ....At least I have three keys now !

But for $US18 rather than the NZ$120 is well worth the couple of weeks wait !

Cheers

It should be clarified in the past posts that there are two distinct things here.

1. recode a key for starting the car

2. recode the remote for unlocking/locking the car.

They are two distinct functions. I never had to go through this IIRC, but keep in mind that 1 and 2 are separate.

I haven't looked through this thread in ages. Maybe there's info on remote coding here? I don't have time to sort through 7 pages though.

Appreciate there are two distint parts

Re - Read through but nothing more gained - I was wondering if there was something in the FCC so I think it's disassemble time to see if the numbers on the circuit board are the same.

Will publish working vs non working

Cheers

So I went to the dealership to ask about them programming a key for me since I only have one key, and to order a standard 2004 key from them and have them program it would be a total of $195 ($95 is for cutting and programming). To me this seems like a complete rip off so rather than going to a dealership is it possible to find a local locksmith and have them cut AND program the key or is there something that only Mazda can do? I would just purchase an uncut 2005 key from ebay or somewhere.

Remember that I only have one key so I can't do any programming myself.

Actually no, my answer is not here and yes, I did just read the entire topic.

Unless I skipped over someone's post, I did not see anybody that said they only had one key and took their switchblade key to be cut and programmed at a locksmith with success.

The reason you didn't find anyone posting that it could be done is that it hasn't been able to be done. Hence all the posts stating that it couldn't be done..
However, recently I've seen places making keys advertising 'smart keys'. I don't know if these smart keys can be used to get around the traditional methods on the rx8's, but probably not. More likely they may have keys that will work with our cars, but you will still need 2 keys to program the new one.

Correct, you do need a second key(valet key) to program another or a new one. You might as well buy a second one, nevertheless, that second set will allow you to program a third yourself.

If I have my original key, my valet key, and a third newly cut key, could the programming method cause my first two keys to no longer work? Has this happened to anyone? Is seems as if this would leave you up **** creek as far as how to start your car. Where would you go from there?
