Has anyone with a US spec car had any luck with the special key? Either with the dealership method, or takahashi's? Hate to say it - I don't feel much like being the guinea pig, here. No dealership close-by, nearest one is 50 miles.

doccable... It is Mazda method. I publish it as I read THEIR manual while THEY are doing it. I was asking for a photocopy but they declined. There is a service manual selling in the eBay. Anyone think it will be worthwhile? They are asking US$90

Is that the "Service Highlights" manual? If so, I recommend it quite highly. I bought mine for $120(USD), and have already used it, and have found it to be a very good reference. The copy I got started out at around $90, but after much bidding, ended up at the price I paid.

RX-Nut:

Did you get in your J-spec key? Have you tried to program it yet using takahashi's instructions? Please let us know.

Thanks...

I got it in but ran into a snag getting it cut. Do you know if an unprogrammed key can at least open the door and trunk?

If so, I need to go back and have that dang key shop recut this key.. I hope it's not f'd up, or there ends my multi-dollar saga.

RX-Nut:

Yes, an unprogrammed key can open the door and trunk. I tested the key myself before having the dealer "try" to program the key. Let me know how you make out.

Thanks,
Kevin

GOOD NEWS dudes. Takahashi's method WORKS!

At first I tried it twice and no go.. Didnt want to tempt the fates so I gave up and was ready to post the bad news. But I went out and tried it once more..

BAM.. She took!!

You gotta be pretty quick though. I think that was my first two mistakes..

Use Key 1, turn to ON, wait till the key icon disappears and count 2 secs..

Quick.. pop in Key 2, turn to ON... wait till the key icon disappears, count to 2..

Quick!! Slam in the new rotary key, turn to ON, and voila!!! If the icon disappears, your key is CODED!!

My first two attempts, I took too long between key swaps. I waited until the icon went out then counted to 4 and then swapped keys.. too slow I think. Then when I used the rotary key and turned it to ON, the key icon just flashed real fast. I was worried that I f'd the car.. If it flashes like that, the key is not working..

GOOD LUCK TO ALL.

I can see it now.. a mad influx of orders for these keys.. I think I should get a kickback.. hahahah Almost scared the **** outta me when the icon freaked.

Now I just gotta figure out how to carry that pretty key and the fob in one. This pretty key and it's leash dont really go with the fob. No real way to attach them.

It works.... good. Now it is offical that you can cut the key yourself and code it yourself.

RX-Nut:

That sounds great!! I wonder what my dealer was doing wrong when they tried programming the key twice? Did they not use the method described? If I go out and program that freaking key in under 5 mins, I'm going back to the dealer and have a little chat with them!!

Thanks for the posted instructions takahashi and for trying it out for us US folks RX-Nut. Might run out later and give it a shot.

Thanks,
Kevin

PS you mention you used your 2 keys to program the extra key. I have 2 regular keys, a gray "valet" key, and now my rotor key (4 total). Should I just add the valet key to the list when programming and leave the rotor key for last?

No.. just use the two black keys then your rotary key.

No need for the grey valet key.

Now I need ideas on how to carry this key along with the fob.. heheh..

Hey all:

I just went and tried programming my key... LOW AND BEHOLD IT WORKED!!! I will be having a chat with my Mazda dealer tomorrow regarding this. I am sorry if I "shied" people away from getting this key. I was going on what my dealer told (and charged) me.

Thanks for the info takahashi and RX-Nut

Kevin

Good to hear it!!

So how are you planning to carry the key and fob together? Are you keeping it separate? I was going to use one of those key rings, but man I think it'll scratch up the rotary key.. Hmm.

I think I might use my dremel to "open" up the foam area for the US spec fobs. I'm hoping to make it large enough to fit the fob so I can carry everything together. When I get the time, I'll try this and post up pics.
