Does this work for the smartkey? ie the one that looks like a credit card?
Boubvht a new one ,.,ie used on ebay,. I had a key cut
and it unlocks the car and also turns the ignition
now how do I program the smartkey? creditcard thingy

OK, so I have a 2004 and have two keys. I just got a switchblade key off ebay and am having trouble getting the key to work. I followed the procedure and am seeing that the problem is that the security light is flashing instead of staying solid when I put the switchblade key. It will let me turn the car on, but not start it. I programed the fob and that works fine. Does anyone know the problem here?????

so strictly speaking this is off topic, but for those of you w/ only 1 key, how much have you paid to have the dealer do the programming? what about the whole package from dealer, ie key + cut + programmed?

I feel silly even posting this...

But... again, another question.

I have an '04 - bought a switch blade key from what the guy said was a cx7 off ebay... I know its not a cx7 remote because it has a trunk release, so it was from an mx5, mazda6 maybe, or rx8...

That said... I got the key cut and programmed just fine. It opens the doors, starts the car no problem.

BUT, I can't get the remote keyless entry to program. I've tried about 5 times now. If anyone could provide a really really basic step by step instruction that would be very helpful, or just let me know the remote I have won't work.

(like in the picture post... what does manually verify mean? push the door lock button on the door to unlock both doors? or does it mean push the locking mechanism by the door handle??)

In tapping the door switch 3 times, nothing happens either.

what's the fcc id on the back of your switchblade? i think the one that's supposed to work is kpu 41788, or at least it sounds like this is the one that other members have been able to get programmed... i believe there're at least 2 different fcc id's for the switchblades, altho i could be wrong

>repeat following 3 times: turn ignition to on position, then back to lock position.
note: do not remove key from steering lock
>push driver door switch 3 times.
(verify door actuators lock/unlock, if not, wait 40s)

>push any button on any single transmitter TWICE
>verify that the door lock actuators lock/unlock

if you have only one transmitter, push any button twice.
if oyu have 2-3 transmitter, push any of the other transmitter (s) twice........

but it seems like you only have one... so i'll end right here.

surprised this hasnt been well known. works with any PATS equipped car when you already have 2 keys.

turn key 1 to on, wait for the car & key sumbol (anti-theft symbol) to turn off
remove key and within 5-10 secs insert key 2 and turn on, again wait for symbol to go off
remove and insert blank key and turn to on and wait for symbol to go off. bam programmed.

of course only works with 2 already programmed keys.

when we do it at the dealer with only 1 programmed key we have to send a series of serial numbers and random generated codes from RKE, SKE or HCE modules to mazda and the send us back the proper incode to access the security system.

on fords you have to attempt to access PATS then wait for 10 minutes and it gives you clearance to do whatever you want.

step 1: open drivers door
2: sit in driver's seat
3: put your finger over, but dont press, the door button (turns off the dome light)
4: insert key into ignition
5: cycle key- on-off-on-off-on-off , wait about 1-2 secs between switching (on position of key, not ACC position) (some cars require removal of key after cycling, normally you can leave the key in the ignition in the off position after cycling)
6: press the door closed button on-off-on-off-on-off , again slow switching on (one on thousand) off, etc.
7: may take a few times to get perfect combo
8: door locks will cycle/click letting you know youre in programming mode
9: press the unlock(sometimes lock, but unlock normally works, if you dont get immediate response from the unlock button try the lock button the second time around) button on the remotes to be programmed twice in quick succession
10: doors will unlock in response to your remote if remote is working/correct part, if it doesnt sense an output it will cycle the locks a few times more

cant make it any easier, hope it helps. (this works on most newer mazdas, not mpv's or tribute tho)

well the fact that his fcc id doesn't start w/ kpu is a bit weird. i dunno if that would affect anything, but all the remotes and switchblades i've seen have the kpu fcc id. maybe it's a non-us remote and they have different frequencies or something?

Yeah... this is where I'm at... I've done the procedure about 10-15 times...

Like people didn't read that my remote was different. The real question is will my FCC number work with the car.... and my own case study tells me no: it won't.

. . . Unless someone else has this FCC number and it does work, which was sort of what I was looking for.

Ugh, have the opposite problem. I have one actual Mazda key, one duplicated key from Walmart, and one switchblade key that isn't taking the programming. I'm going to assume that Walmart sucks and basically just copied the code in my existing key so this probably won't work for me. But! I was able to program the FOB.... Stupid dealership is going to get their $160.....grrrrrrrrrr

a walmart duplicated key won't have the digital code programmed in it.

if you only have 1 programmed key, you must have mazda program a 2nd one.

then with 2 PROGRAMMED keys, you can do this feature.

Ok... well, my key itself works... starts the car, opens the doors, etc...

The keyless transmitter does not work. I'm assuming it is because it is for the wrong Mazdas based on the different FCC numbers.

I've tried the procedure here around 30 times total and had another local with an 8 read through it and try it, but no luck...

Does anyone know anything more about the FCC number being the problem for sure?

do your door locks cycle when doing the procedure. to let you know the car is in programming mode the locks will cycle. if they do and youre pressing the buttons on the remote and it doesnt program then yes the fob is broken or wont work with ur car.

Question Dealer Key

I just bought a 2007 RX for my daughter. Unfortunatly there was only one key with the car. I called the local Mazda dealer for a new key and was qouted a price of $47 for the key blank, $187 for the remote and he did not know how much for the programming but guessed it would be around $100. That $334 an extra key set but I got to have one. I have seen used sets with an uncut key blank on e-bay for around $50. Should I buy one of those and take it to the dealer saving $187or should I just suck it up and pay the dealer price because a used one probably will not work?

Because there is only 1 key that came with the car, you'll have to go eat the cost to have it programmed, but you can find uncut transponder keys on ebay and have them cut at Mazda and only pay the dealer for the programming itself.

Also, you can find used keyless entry remotes that you can program yourself also which you do not need the dealer for...

If you bought the car from a dealer I would tell them they need to give you 2 keys - period. Just because they took the car in on a trade (for example) and only got one key isn't your fault. They should eat the $334 and give you a 2nd key.

Somewhat related, somewhat off topic, may even be a repost...

My switchblade's (about 8 months old) battery died a couple days ago. I popped it open, tracked down a replacement at Radio Shack and had to redo the remote programming. I was a little surprised but was just glad to get it working again.

I had to use the regular key for a couple days and was really jonesin' (switchblade on an '04)

ShellDude, did you have to do anything particular to get the switchblade key to work? Because looking on e-bay, it seems that all of them are for '05 and up. I just recently purchased an 04 with only 1 key, and no remotes, so I want to pick up a switchblade if possible.

'04 should be the same procedure. You will need to get a second key from the dealer though to be able to program a key yourself.

new key fob

Hi,

I have a Mazda RX8 2004 04 plate, the key fob stopped working so i took it to my nearest dealer, they tested it and said it was faulty and i needed a new one, i have bought 1 and was wondering if i need to take it back to the dealer to get them to program it or if there is anything i can do myself, i only have one ignition key and only HAD one key fob, any help/info would be great, i have tried the method in the threads on here but never seems to work.

you can defnitely do it yourself. The procedure is fairly simple and well documented here amongst the more lengthy "I've got a switchblade key" threads ... The actual mazda service manual is scanned and available too.
