Cruise control relocation with aftermarket steering wheel
Ok so I did a search and only found one topic a guy posted asking about this back in 2006 and got the bash for it, so I'll post a couple pics and things I did yesterday and relocated the cruise control buttons onto the upper plastic piece that covers the steering column and installed a MOMO Tomcat steering wheel and hub I had in another car.. MOMO hub has blinker return holes vertical so I drilled 2 horizontal holes and it works good.
This is the final product functional cruise control buttons and aftermarket steering wheel with MOMO hub.
The radio control buttons were operational too and I could have kept them and integrated them unto the left side but that seemed kinda pointless when you can just reach the radio..
So the first thing you want to do is pop out the bottom kick panel piece with your fingers. Then unscrew the bottom steering column cover it has 3 screws underneath. Remove steering wheel first or after this, 2 10mm bolts on the sides undo the airbag (you might want to disconnect the battery before removing airbag for Pete's sake) with a small flat head screwdriver undo the clips on the yellow and orange air bag clips and remove th3m along with the airbag. The red ground wire for the horn I cut and am not using it, doubt you could.
Undo the 21mm nutt holding the steering wheel with a breaker bar. You're gonna need a rubber mallet and a couple good wacks at the bottom of the steering wheel in a straight position, then turn the steering wheel upside down and wack it again at that position on the opposite side and it will eventually come out, I heard people needing puller tools etc. to do so maybe they didn't wack it the right way.. Anyhow, undo the pigtails and dissassemble the plastic cover on the steering wheel and remove the CC and radio buttons controls, I didn't take a pic of where I cut the wires from the Radio controls but I did so right below the red wire where the red power wire comes from the CC buttons to the radio buttons its a 3 way wire giving power to the Radio buttons so I just cut all the radio wires below the red wires 3 way, and RTV's the ends of the wires so they are not exposed.
Next I removed the black plastic spool ring with yellow sticker and went to town in carefully destroying it without damaging the important spool of wires inside of it or the metal pins you will need. Just pry the tabs off with the small flat head and eventually pry up on the ring until the inner circle rings breaks off and it will open up. Only 1 spool of wires is necessary for the CC and radio buttons, the other spool is for the air bag.
MAKE SURE you remember the orientation of the two sides of the spool wire pins and how the plug goes into the wiring harness and the cruise control buttons, also there is 1 empty slot on both pigtails for grounds not needed when removed from the oem assembly. So I taped the exposed ends, zip tied them a bit and basically tucked that nice bundle under the steering column. Drilled 1 hole on the upper column plastic cover for the small Phillips head screw for the CC buttons and used the upper clip piece of the CC buttons kinda inside the whole that the plastic cover goes around the coloumn to hold it from moving and that is about it. Install your hub and wheel and enjoy the working cruise controls mounted elsewhere and aftermarket steering wheel installed for whatever reasons led you to it. The wires are long enough to relocate the CC buttons unto the dash somewhere else. The steering wheel on this car was worn out, this momo is cool but is not symmetrical and is too close up forward so Imma get a round one that sticks out more soon and sell this one for cheap..

does the steering angle sensor plate have to be set in certain position? mine came off when i installed my aftermarket steering wheel and it back on as best i can can remember the orientation. had to drill new holes on the NRG hub adapter for the angle sensor plate. when i turn the steering wheel at low speed like during parking, i can feel pulsation in the powering steering motor, like it cuts on and off. i don't remember feeling that with the oem wheel. i wonder if it's because of the lighter and smaller after market wheel.

Sounds like an Electric Power Steering problem, prolly the torque sensor is going bad, you might need a replacement unit as you can't replace the sensor itself, does it do it to the right harder than to the left ? There's a reset procedure you can do lifting the front end of the car up then back down so that the wheels barely touch the ground then turn the wheel all the way to the left then all the way to the right a couple times.. Also you can clean the grounding points for better contact. The white plastic blinker piece goes horizontally.
