What about K&N drop in filter ?
Guys, I know many have bad experince with the K&N Typhoon kit ? I am wondering would it be good to have the drop in filter instead. Do anyone here have this filter on their ride, any comments.
I noticed that the stock intake has a piping down to the mid bumper section but the opening it very small, anyone thought of modifying that inlet hole (to widen / enlarge it) so as to run more cool air to the airbox.

most of the time the K&N drop-in filter does no more than create a nice air sucking sound when you accelerate, and doesn't make much difference in power. you *may* get better gas mileage, but probably not enough to make you notice.
However, since it is washable/reusable, you'll never have to buy another air filter again, so it'll save you money in the long run!

I'm not sure about the Typhoon system but I have always used the drop in filters and they are GREAT because all I have to do is clean them like once every year or two.

I had a K&N drop in replacement filter for about 1000 miles. As soon as I installed it, my mileage went up 2mpg and stayed there until I removed it.
My only issue was that every so often (in my case, before every autocross), I had to remove the mass airflow sensor and clean the filter oil off of it. Otherwise, the throttle response was horrible, and high rpm running suffered quite a bit (as it got more oil on the MAS).
As soon as I removed it, the car ran the same (i don't think there was a horsepower gain) but there was no more oil on the MAS. Mileage dropped back 2mpg and has stayed there ever since.
I have always said that if I had a street only car, I would have this filter. For autocross, it became too much trouble - those screws that hold in the MAS strip REALLY easy.
Hope this helps.

I am thinking of installing a K&N Filter, into my RX-8 and I have read problems on this and another thread regarding oil on the MAF sensor (as the K&N is oil-based).
I do around 24,000 and could benefit from the improvement in MPG
How serious a problem would the oil on the MAF sensor be and how easy is to clean the MAF sensor?

It's not a serious problem, and the MAS is VERY easy to clean. On the top of the intake tract, just behind the filter, you will see the two screws that hold it in. Remove the two screws, pull, and it's out.
I use a spray cleaner (the temperature sensor is visible, but the sensors for the mixture are WAY up in the plastic tunnel). I was just careful to buy a clener that completely evaporates. It takes less than 2 minutes, start to finish.
Be careful with those screws, though.

I installed it myself, and I have had K&N's in every car/motorcycle I've owned for 25 years. Typically, they come over-oiled from K&N, and when I clean and re-oil them it is MUCH drier than when it was new.
The cleaning/reoil instructions are very specific, and if they are followed it works very nicely.
I am a HUGE fan of their products, it just didn't suit my particular needs on the RX-8 due to the buildup on the MAS. The rotary needs SO much more air, I think it's an issue with rotaries, not the filters.

Thanks guys for the responses,
If this relatively cheap mod, can get me an improvement of 1 MPG, with the amount of mileage I do, then I will save the costs in a couple of months.
Thanks again.

The K&N is very oiled up.
If you want a drop in filter replacement, get a green filter. You can get them for about $60, they are very lightly oiled, it isn't going to drip and get on your sensors (I've had mine installed for around 4k miles without issue).
So far that I've seen, both of the K&N air filters on the RX-8 only cause problems. It really makes me wonder why people keep using them even though there have been dozens of documented cases on this board alone with people having issues with them.

K&N drop in causes no problems on the RX8--I've used K&N in every vehicle I've owned and never had an issue with them. They pay for themselves and slightly improve MPG. Green vs. K&N is negligible--go for whichever. The K&Ns are not that heavily oiled.
