Being serious now .......
you can get a little bit with a piggyback (I got 1.5mpg improvement) but it does nothing for cruise mpg - only hard accel. mpg is improved . You would never recoup your investment with the savings however.

If you get the interceptor x you will probably get worse mileage (from what I've read here)

is it safe for the tranny to do that?

go buy a testpipe so you can program your ECU and run more lean

the rotary engine is programmed to run very rich to keep the cat alive, without the cat...why run it rich?? and beside, running it more lean will give you more HP

the cat is the bulge in your exhaust system just after where it comes out of the motor. It is short for catalytic converter & is there to reduce emissions . I believe it is highly illegal to remove it in your area however . An alternative is to have a 'high flow' cat fitted by an exhaust shop .

There are probably 3 ways to increase your gase mileage:
More efficient use of fuel
More efficient delivery of power
Less work to be done

Depending on how you drive and how well your car is tuned, your mpg can be all over the place to start. Some people get 17mpg highway peak. I touch 22. During spirited driving, I've gotten as low as 11.4 mpg. Buying a piggy back system or any EMS gives the possibility that you will up your MPG. It also gives the possibility that you will lower your mpg. If you try hard enough, you can probably use an EMS to run your injectors 100% open and just dump your entire tank of fuel into your engine while sitting in the driveway. I would probably shy away from that.

Now, the question becomes - are you REALLY worried about your MPG or do you just want to buy some cool car parts and have a better/stronger car. If you buy an EMS for $500 and have it programmed perfectly for $500, you've both gotten a decent deal on something (though some systems run cheaper, many are MUCH more expensive) and gotten the best tuning deal for a lifetime tune I've seen. That's a $1000 investment - certainly not bad. If it raises your mpg from 20 to 22, thats some decent results. And if gas costs 3$ a gallon, it'll only take 74,000 miles to pay its self off. 2mpg is a nice return, $1000 isn't too expensive, and 74000 miles is a lot of driving. To be honest, you're probably not going to save money in the long run by buy car parts. That really isn't the point anyway.

Now, if you reduce the weight of the car (reduce the amount of work to be done), drive fairly lightly, and run a little higher tire pressure, you can probably do 2mpg better for free. 22 mpg isn't exactly a civic though.

I have 2 recommendations:
1. Embrace your car, accept the weekly fillup bills with stoic pride, and enjoy the ride. Even if you drive 20k miles a year, that's only a $1000 output for gas over what an 30mpg car does. It's doable.
2. Completely ignore MPG, buy car parts, and enjoy driving. It's more expensive and you'll probably wind up getting less MPG, but it's definitely more fun.
