Greddy turbo kit.......mpg?
I was wonderign if the greddy kit can be turned to run in two modes.......mpg mode to save gas and race mode to race :D . I was thinking that this woudl have to do something with the piggyback ecu that greddy has..how would you do that. I am such a newbie with rotoriies and this turbo kit.......

hehe n/a al the way (well until i get fi that is)
but why don't you just get a eo-1 (liek nemesis8 said)..then you can just have 2 different boost levels..one for fun and one for fuel?

hmmm......i have a E0-1 but is there a way to program the greddy fuel computer with the eo-1? I thought that turbocharging your car a small amount can increase your mpg to a certain degree. I understand that turbos can guzzle gas, t-88H, but smaller one as long as they dont use any more gas can possible create more power with same fuel, increasing acceleration, where most of fuel is used and thus saving fuel......it is that GReddy piggyback fuel that i was thinking of having 2.........one for boost and one for gas. They dotn have to be turned on by a switch in teh car....i can plug them in manually because when i race at the track, i know ahead of time adn i dotn see that point in wastign gas when not racing.....

Turbos do not consume fuel. They compress air. The motor consumes fuel/air to create an explosion. It needs more fuel with the more air it consumes. Turbos make the motor consume more air hence they need more fuel. The more air you force into the motor, the more fuel you must keep adding.
If you want to save fuel, you have to reduce the amount of air entering the motor. With a turbo, that means stay out of boost, as you can not introduce more air without more fuel.
If you have a motor that actually performs better when more air is introduced, then it probably was receiving too much fuel in the first place and is now running closer to ideal air/fuel mixture.
And to compound on this problem more, a tune for the street would generally be richer and consume more fuel as pump gas is less reliable than race gas and more prone to early detonation.
I am also not sure how people tune for varying levels of boost. You should have an ideal tune for any boost level you are attempting with a single map.
Different maps are for different forms of fuel.

well, there goes getting a turbo for my dad's car to help increase his mpg.....these rx-8 dont exactly sip on gas. Then again what cars do anymore........I guess people that introduce more air for mor epower but dont introduce any more fuel, making a lower fuel:air ratio but creating more power. Seems legit but on the dangerous side, is there any other mods that can increas mpg? exhaust, air filter, or would a supercharger be best?
BTW: thanks for not flaming and putting up with such a newbie

Improving efficiency of the motor tends to help with fuel as it is working better with what it already has so on many cars in many cases bolt ons do help since you are only helping it run leaner. This is assuming you were running too rich such as the 8 does. It is debateble if they make any difference on our car, but at the least I can offer with intake and exhaust on the 8 I still get the same or better in terms of mpg which is around 19mpg average mix of city/highway.

Also if you have a boost controller you can control boost level. A regular street mode where you run say 4 psi vs. a race mode where you run 8/9 psi might help gas mileage, but that kind've defeats the purpose of having a turbo in a way. Less boost, less fuel being tossed into the engine. In general I would think it is dangerous to put less fuel in a turbo engine, the lean condition can lead to detonation & destory your engine in short order. For a turbo kit, you can tune the map so that it runs leaner. Right now the Greddy maps are rich, a bit too rich. You can lean it out a bit, this will increase gas mileage, increase hp (& hopefully not lead to detonation if done correctly). I really don't see how a SC would be better than a turbo for gas mileage.
This should pretty much be turbo 101 for you, especially if you are/were rolling in Twin Turbo Supra.
