Safe to drill holes in trunk behind passanger seat?
I did some searching but wasn't able to find an answer for this. This weekend I am going to do my battery relocation and I want to mount my aluminum battery box in the area right behind the passenger seat in the trunk. It looks like the fuel tank sits right under this area so I wanted to make sure it's safe to drill down (carefully) to make holes to mount the box.

Only problem you will have is access to the underside to put the nuts on the bolts
You should not use self threading screws to hold a battery in the trunk
You need bolts and large flat washers to keep the thing bolted down
I made a bracket that attaches to the strut bolts....and it is very secure

You can drill through the trunk anywhere as long as you do it carefully. There is a 1" - 2" gap between the trunk and the fuel tank. Just be careful. Use a stop on the drill bit if you are concerned. This way you can set it so you will not inadvertently drill to deep.

Thanks for the quick replies guys
I'm having trouble envisioning how I would attach the box securely to the strut bolts, would you be willing to take a picture of your setup?

Paint and or grease it too (just the hole rim not whole trunk of course). Holes in body will mean rust later. Once a drill cut into the side of the metal the galvanization will not exist on the tiny inner cut area. So Rust will show up at night while you sleep and start eating away. It will vary but like uh I have see old Rx7's where you can stick your hand inside rust holes. From like just rock chips damage the paint & galvanization.

I used #12 sheet metal screws, just punched through the metal enough with a Phillips head screwdriver and hammer to get them started.
If you drill there's some emission equipment under there you don't want to drill through. The gas tank isn't under that area. It's basically the area above the rear diff and forward rear suspension components
