I haven't heard of a black boot being offered for the Rx8. We made one for the S2000 Honda. They had rattling when they went into VETC. Some of them were cured but some have so much vibration that they can't be helped. That is a function of a large 4 clyd engine with no balance shaft.
The rotory should not have this problem.
I think the 8 gets smoother at the top. See if you can give me a better discription of what you are hearing. Are you using the stock ****?
Aftermarket ***** can cause problems. Sometimes not.

 

I've been driving around with the short shifter for a little over a week now and all I can say is WOW! The throws are definitely shorter and it makes the driving experience soo much more fun. Thank you Richard Paul for making one of the best mods for the rx8.

On a side note, whenever I shift into reverse, the shifter seems to pop up a little bit when i take my hand off the shifter. It still goes into gear, but I just wanted to know if this happens to anyone else.

 

I had a similar issue and it turned out to be the 1-2-3-4-5-6-R circle being loose at the top, I took out the circle with some duck tape and a hairdryer. Tightened a screw below (assuming you have the illuminated ****) then re-glued the circle with some modeling glue.

 

I have another issue RP, I think I'm just a little rougher than everyone else, didn't manage to split the cup on the bottom this time but It has shaved down quite a bit since the last install. As a side effect the shift from 3rd to 4th above 7000rpm grinds before going into gear, 60-75% of the time.

How/Why would the shaven down cup be doing that?
If its hard to tell whats going on in the picture, that band around the bottom of the cup is the separation point between where the plastic is untouched and where it has been worn down equally around its circumference until the tip.

Mine did that as well Polak.

Richard sent me out a new cup and I installed it myself. Probably not as gracefully as pressing it on but it did get pressed without the tool. When I was done I ripped a phone book in half.

Redline MT-90 that time. I've converted over to Redline Shockproof Lightweight. Its some pretty cool looking stuff mainly because its laguna seca blue in color, but I like the feel after the first testdrive.

i think some of the cups had issues with lucas products.

i'm not worried I only hit 7k-9k in 3rd merging onto highways and such, so its not a problem to restrain myself for a few days now that I know its not a syncro thats fudged. You should see what i did to one of those delrin cups around page 17-20 or so.

 

The groove is from pushing down for reverse, it hits the shuttle. People who are harder going for reverse have had problems. There is a new material starting next week. It is more plyable then the Kevlar. All new shifters and all replacments will be the new spec. If you break one we can send you a new one or replace it for you. Don't gang up on me they will be comming off the lathe on Sat. so there is a limited amount until we get cought up on new shifter orders.

i was riding in my car with scott from mazsport on wed.. he noticed the trans / shifter noise was a bit loud.. well i told him i tried the cut down the green felt thing and it failed..

green felt gone, sound almost gone..

is it done yet???? i can now hear my car run at 74 mph!!!!

I lost my last 8 in an accident...test drove an R3 with intent to buy, but I asked Richard Paul if they made a short shifter for it and he said no.

I'm back in another CR Shinka with my old AFE SS installed...it's that good.

 

Now That's an endorsement! You're better off in another CR Shinka anyway. Enjoy!

 

I recently installed an AFE SS w/ Fluid Motorsports (now Race Roots) Synchro Saver. I didn't quite follow Gomez's DIY since I felt that the "yank the boot" method would work better. If you give it a swift, but gentle tug upwards - the cover comes off with no broken clips

First Impressions

I really couldn't believe just how good this shifter felt. I used to own an AP2 Honda S2000 and this shifter made it feel reminiscent of that OEM shifter. The throws were precise and there was definitely some positive feedback through the shifter. The problem I found with the OEM shifter on the RX8 was that it felt like it was "wandering" through the gates. Now, when I'm in 3rd gear, I KNOW that I'm in third gear.

I can say that this added a bit of confidence with mid-corner shifting. Thank you RP for a GREAT product!

Oh....and I love the click-click sound that I get from the Synchro Saver - I couldn't complain since the seller of my AFE SS included it in the deal!

How many have experienced less "lock-out" with the AFE installed? How does that work? Is the short shifter making it easier to bypass the lock-out at the expense of possibly causing more stress on the syncros or other transmission parts?

 

Everyone should understand that the shifter only works the existinf shutle assembly. Nothing is magic about it. It does not make it harder on the parts or make you a better driver. It just helps you get more in tune with the mechanicals.
If your a complete nerd who can't feel any conection with the mechanics of your ride then this is not going to help your lap time. If you really want to feel everything thats going on under you then you shouldn't deny yourself this part.

 

I have the shifter since how long now? How long you have made them Paul?

I have the first batch of shifter and it has not missed a bit at all. Love it and I don't know where the OEM one is now.

 

Hi Taka, long time since we speak. I remember you getting one of the first batch we sent to my good mate Hymee. Also you had Gomez install it for you. You seem to know all the scoundrals in Oz. Gomez as latecomers may not know wrote the install thread, he doesn
t post much anymore but I think he watches the forum.

I assume you've seen Hymee's Indy car by now. He tells me he can fit in it now, do we believe him?
Good to see your still driving the Rx8 and if I remember you do drive the **** out of it.
There are new lower bushings in the last year or so. Hymee should have one for you.

The original ones were Delrin but failed early. We went to Kevlar and it lasted but sometimes it cracked because it was hard. I can't remember when but it must be 1.5 to 2 years by now we went to a machinable nylon 6/6 then to some with moly added. So the first were black, then the buff color of Kevlar then the white and finally grey. The last two work great and we haven't seen one come back yet.
See if Hymee has any of the latest ones, if not I will send some. The latest ones are easy to install as they are soft.
