Thanks Gomez for the education. I have to make a habit of checking out the OZ Forum. Although, I barely have enough time to check this portion of the Forum.

I have to say it again. I LOVE this shifter. :D

That's why we sell them without the ****, if it makes noise it's your fault for putting one on. :D

Talking

Well I just installed mine, this is the first mod of a whole weekend of mods, and I must say it was overall very easy and I love the difference! One of thsoe 10mm bolts really gave me a helluva time, sucker wouldn't budge, almost bent my socket wrench. But I squirted a little WD-40 and it eventually came off.

Oh yeah, after I got the first tab undone for the console, I got the rest off super easy with the "pull" method , I wasn't trying to but I pulled the whole thing out in one shot, and with no broken tabs......

Once it has that original break in mileage and I can wind it up I'll put a shifter in it and solve this sneeky little engineering secret.

It's really pretty exciting, a legend in the shifter world. A product so finely tuned it's a tuning fork. Pun intended.

I hope I don't break that tab. Gomez, you wanna come over to install it for me? Nah, a new consol would be cheaper.
You guys have me so wound up over this damn tab, I forgot we already did two of these here. One of them in and out a few times when we were finalizing the design. Don't remember breaking the tab.
here was my little mexican vacation, way of topic but just for your rp. mexico was good.

You need to use a fill in flash.

Just got my AFE shifter today and finished the install in about 30 min (using the DIY in the Tech forum--thanks to the guys who posted there). Made an excuse to the wife to run to Lowes so I could test it out, and all I can say is, "holy s**t". I was amazed at what a difference this makes...makes this car feel even more like a race car when you are driving it...love it. Thanks to RP and axial flow engineering for a great design :D

I do have one question. In 1st and 2nd, there is a whirring sounds as the rpm climbs. Should I be concerned?
This is what I did to fix that noise.. (cut & paste from OZ forum)

OK.. I finally did it... After much screwing around with my ****, both clockwise and anticlockwise I have found out how to get rid of the noise 99%
You may or may not have noticed when you removed the console that under the boot there is some sound deadening material, similar to the thick rugs that removalist use. Anyway, I removed that altogether and voila!!! the sound of silence was like music to my ears.. I even drove around teh block a few times in 2nd just to make sure and ran her through the entire rev range.. well that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it

So anyone else who may be experiencing any sort of noise in 2nd, give this trick ago. I'm not making any promises as i can't figure out why this is the solution, all I know is that it worked for me.

EDIT: I still have a ball bearing out of a bicycle hun sitting on top of the SS, so that I can't screw the **** down too far.

Cheers.

This gets stranger all the time. Little john, could you try removing the ball from under the **** and see it this still works. If it requires that the **** be unscrewed that amount I can always make the thread shorter in future produced units. And thanks for the tip. Why in the hell you would think to try that is amazing.

What do you think of this Gomez??

I get my own car today so after I run it in and get a feel for the stock shifter I'll start experimenting with this myself. Yes, finally between 11am and 1pm it will be here. It's now 7:45am. Bet you guys can't wait, can you? If you were closer you'd be out in the street waiting for the truck on your lunch break. :D :D

Thanks LittleJohn. When I remove the upper shift boot, the insulating material was actually resting against one side of the OEM shifter and not wraped around it. After I install the "Stick of Wonder" I figure I'll wrap this insulating material around the shifter, thinking that would be proper. I'll definitely try it, but I'll have to wait until this weekend.

RP,
Yes I did try this already. With the both the ball bearing and insulating material removed, the noise was greatly improved but was still there. As i gradually unscrewed the **** the noise got softer and softer until it was just about gone, but the **** was too loose. So I put the ball bearing back in and screwed the **** back on until it was snug but not too tight and the noise was about 99% gone. i.e. with windows up and every thing off I could just hear it (btw, it was about 11pm, and my neighbourhood is quiet). But this is nothing to whinge about. Driving around ordinarily, it was just like stock. I won't say eactly like stock, cos I honestly can't remember what stock sounds like anymore :D

QUOTE=Richard Paul]... Why in the hell you would think to try that is amazing...
[/QUOTE]

Well to be honest, ever since I installed your SS, the noise has been bugging me somewhat, even though I was able to improve on it a little with the ball bearing fix, it wasn't just right... if you know what I mean. So for the past couple of weeks whenever I'm in traffic or coming to a set of lights, I've been playing around with the shifter whilst in 2nd, and I noticed that if I squeeze the boot just right, I could get the noise to change pitch or even go quieter. And others in the Oz forum have commented on increased noise when they rest their hand on the ****. So I figure there must be a firm contact of sorts between the ****, boot and shifter which causes the noise to be transmitted through. Seeing that adding more insulatling material didn't help any, i decided to take everything out. I notice that the outer boot is no longer "pressed?" against the lower inner rubber boot. I'm not saying that this is the source of the noise transmission, but it's very suspicious.
I will try to do some more investigating to find out why this is so.

Earlier on I posted why I think this is occurring (as quoted below), and this latest idea is consistent with my theory on the cause of the noise. Removing the wadding has the same result as unscrewing the shift ****.....it reduces pressure on the shifter and allows it to rest freely. I had tried leaving the upper rubber shift boot off, but that didn't work. LittleJohn's fix is simple and ingenious. I can't believe we'll get rid off 99% of the noise, but any reduction is a step in the right direction.

OK... Maybe I was a little over zealous when I quoted 99% :D And since I didn't pull out my SPL meter to take readings before and after, lets just say that "most" the noise is gone

This isgood news. Did you try it yet Gomez. I'll try it myself in a few days. The test bench finally got her. See pic.

Just came back from driving it and traded it off for awhile with a S2000 with my prototype shifter in it. It was great. Compared to the stock 8 which sucks. I didn't have 10 miles on it when I made a shift into 2nd instead of 4th. Good thing I was taking it ez.

OK this photo is for you L&L, make your heart putter?

I sure hope Hymee brought me a sticker.

Looks good Richard, but about Hymee....

I'm keeping him here. Sorry, but he feels my Winning Blue will go faster using his supercharger than any other color.

I want him to prove it.

I'm amazed that Yellow RX-8's are still available there when they stopped producing them ages back. In what month was it built, Richard?

And no, I haven't ventured outside to give this latest idea a go yet.....

8/03 I think. Guess no one wanted a yellow one so it sat on the lot all this time. Except that they had three red ones and a black one also. I'm interested to see which flash it has. It now has 34 miles on it. It also didn't come with an owners manual. I assume they have those?

It has that stupid spare, I hear they are worthless. Comments?

Now as to the naming site that you bitched at me about on another thread, I'll go there now to see what I must do. I must live up to my responsabilitys.

My God! Twenty months it sat on the lot! How much did they pay you to take it..... . It would have been re-flashed before you got it.

Yes, the spare is useless. Advertise it on this site, there are plenty of weirdo's here who will pay you good money for it.
