i installed mine yesterday
so far it's great.
I've noticed that the shifts are much more precise, much shorter but a lot heavier. Not that that's a bad thing at all, but it'll take me some getting used to.
It only even bothers me in 4-5 and 5-6. The shift pattern takes a little getting used to in those 2 shifts in particular. I never feel like i'm far enough to the right, but I go from 4-5 on a diagonal so that shift isnt bad. 5-6, i'm used to riding the wall but it doesnt even seem necessary anymore. You just pull straight down from 5 and it drops right into gear.
It's just deceiving.

The shifts are so fast and I love that. I need to get it out and up to speed one of these days as I havent had a chance to do that yet. I've done some fast 1-2's and those are perfect. I dont have to worry about revs dropping nearly as much to shift smoothly anymore. It's quite nice.

Reverse is noticeably easier to get into and I no longer have the problem where the car would go half way into reverse and then pop out when you let off the clutch (causing a grinding sound that really irritated the hell out of me).

Overall, i'm quite happy with it. I'm looking forward to driving to austin this weekend with the new shifter.

Thanks Taka, I thought I tried that but I guess I did it wrong.
That is a great story though isn't it? I couldn't have thought that up if I tried.
On top of that it was a yellow one. Still waiting for mine to get here. Then I can drive around with a Axialflow Shifter. Hope I don't break the damn tab on my own car. That would be the *****. How would I explain that one.
Maybe I should do what you did and fly Gomez in to install it for me.

honestly, the tab in mine was REALLY strong.. i dont think i could've broken it that easily with 1 finger. When i pulled on it i was wondering if it was the right one because i was expecting it to flex really easily. So i just put pressure on it while pushing upwards and it popped right up.. really easy.

Right. I installed mine today, with the aid of a mate. (he has tools!)

As for the install..... easy peasy except for that first clip..its a right bitch!!!! once we got that done, no problems.

Feedback.

Richard Paul is god. I absolutely love it. Its as if i was trying to drive with this shifter before i had it, as its suits my driving style perfectly.

I can now finger and palm shift, and the 1-2, and most important 2-3 shifts are awesome now. 3-4 is a beautiful short snick, as is 5-6.

In the orginal shifter, i used to fail the 2-3 shifts all the time as i hammered the stick into the gate between 1 and 3. now it snicks in perfectly everytime.

After i fitted it i couldnt belive how good it felt. I was driving a TVR Chimaera previously, which has a nice racing type box on it, and this brings it back along that feel! Mazda should have made a stick like this to start with, it was always my biggest problem with the car. More power would be nice, but hey thats just a bonus, this is essential!

I notice slightly more transmisison whine, esp in second gear, but maybe it just needs to settle and grease up. Its only slight, and sounds quite cool anyway 8)

I's reallllllly happy! yay!

I installed mine this morning. Easy install and shift's are great except i had a problem getting it in reverse. Had to push real hard down to get it engaged! After a call to RP he told me to file the reverse fork down on top. After filing a little, it is perfect!

Perfection does take time!
Thanks, RP

Hey Gomez, I can't come up with a cute name right now so in order to stop the confusion lets change what we can to: RAP. You can edit your posts and maybe it will catch on. Example of the problem is at this moment this thread was listed right above a thead named Rotary Performance something or other. Not fair to them mostly, as they are bigger then I. Yet I bet they are glad the shifter has had good reviews. If not they might feel it and be justifiably upset with me.

I'll make an effort to think of a good name, but you aussies failed me the last time you tried. It can't be that tounge in cheeck. Or an inside joke. I'd go for it but it is not smart.

I address this to Gomez because he seems to be the leader of the naming game. Anyone else who wants to butt in on this can.

I agree that all yellow drivers should get discounts.

PS Richard, I'm the king of naming stuff...... what needs a name?

Awesome shifter !
I hated the stock shifter. I feel like I have a new car now.
Best mod I have done so far.

Do you have any idea how many bloody posts I'd have to edit !!

No way, stuff Rotary Performance......your initials were around a long time before the rotary engine was even invented!

Listen, since you're already using "someone else's" name, call it the AFE QuickSilver shifter and let B&M get pissed off with you!

Cheers,

Ordered last Monday and received last Wednesday. Finally installed it yesterday. What a difference!? No more 1st to 2nd clank. Shifting into reverse is an absolute sure thing. The shoftng is precise and with authority. I know all this has been said before. But I must say.. LOVE IT!

I do have one question. In 1st and 2nd, there is a whirring sounds as the rpm climbs. Should I be concerned?

Got mine and had a friend install on Friday. Was FANTASTIC on the drive from DFW to Austin Friday night and all day Saturday. Had some issues Sunday morning with not being able to get into 5th or 6th and having problems getting into 1st. Jenkins-Crew did the install and was with me and thinks the spring has come undone causing the shifter to stay in the down position, like when you shift into reverse. I can't push down anymore and when I attempt to hit 6th, I'm in reverse. Anyone have any suggestions for fixing this???

Dazygirl, look and see if the spring retainer has jumped up over the pivot cup. If this has happened yoou will have to remove the retainer in order to get the unit out. It can then be reassembled in the normal manor. This is strange as I redesigned the pivot cage with a 2mm larger dia so this could not happen. It happened once and I redid all the following units and retrofitted the first ones with new parts.

I'm very concerned that you had this problem with the new part. Could you have Jenkins Crew take it out and let me know what it looks like? You can call me, just PM me for my cell phone number. I'll be watching the computer for your response.

Thanks Richard. The spring does look like it's holding down the retainer and Jenkins tried to pull it out, but was unsuccessful. We're going to look at it again tonight though so I'll give you a call.

Dazy:...mine was the only other one that did this. Tell JC that he needs to remove the clip that holds the spring in....then take the spring and the shifter out together.

If you do it that way it is easy....and you won't break anything. I reinstalled mine with the spring turned so the ends are not at the slots in the plastic cup...and haven't had the problem since.

Also, how does the shift **** make this noise? One would think a tighter shift **** would make less noise.

Please excuse my ignorance just wanted to learn. :o And thanks again for the help.

One of the guys in the Oz forum discovered this fix. I believe it works by allowing the shifter to rest free of pressure supplied when the **** is screwed up tight against the shift boot. This pressure holds the shifter against the selector in the top of the box and transmits gear noise into the cabin. You'll notice that resting your hand on the shifter when driving increases the gear noise in a similar way.

Removing the **** altogether reduces the noise even further!

Wow, my own little wierd science project. My car gets here today (finally) and I want to put about 1000 mi on it with the stock shifter so I have a good feel for it.
Once it has that original break in mileage and I can wind it up I'll put a shifter in it and solve this sneeky little engineering secret.

It's really pretty exciting, a legend in the shifter world. A product so finely tuned it's a tuning fork. Pun intended.

I hope I don't break that tab. Gomez, you wanna come over to install it for me? Nah, a new consol would be cheaper.
You guys have me so wound up over this damn tab, I forgot we already did two of these here. One of them in and out a few times when we were finalizing the design. Don't remember breaking the tab.
