mine at least seems to be getting a tad deeper and better sounding... still has a long way to go to sound good to my ear though

Yes, mine is sitting in my office in the corner - what's it worth?

10KRPMS is looking for a complete good one here:

I wanted to share with everyone that the CEL I encountered shortly after installing my supercat came back and never went away. I tried unhooking the battery again but could never get it to clear. I order the sCANalyser to read and clear the code. The code is P0420 which to the best of my research is a CAT based error, so I do not expect it to go away forever. With the software to periodically read and clear the code I am not really concerned, certainly not enough to put the stock one back on.

Nearly 24 hours after clearing the code it's still gone. Before when I would disconnect the battery it might go away for a drive or two but come back. So maybe it just needed to be cleared.

Next time I have it on the lift, latter this week, I will check all the connections just to make sure. I did the install so I know everything was tight.

I Posted too soon the CEL is back. I haven't confirmed which but I suspect it will be the same.

CAT Midpipe

I was wondering, with the decrease size of this "Cat" has anyone tried to add more heat shielding on the underbody? I was curious if this would help with heat transmission into the cabin?

I thought about it, but never did anything. There is more room for sure.

Bringing back a thread from the dead.

I read twenty pages of how great this Supercat is which gets my mind thinking that I need one of these things. I hate it when that happens.

Most of you went for the RB + RP combo which does sound great but has anyone matched it up with the TurboXS or new MS Sport exhaust? I've heard the TurboXS with it's racing midpipe which is insanely loud. If there is a clip out there with either exhaust and this Supercat, I'd like to take a listen.

Thanks for all the great reviews and the tips in this thread thus far.

For what it's worth, I recently installed the newly redesigned supercat with my Greddy SP2. Before the supercat, I absolutely loved the sound of the SP2... kinda loud, but refined and exotic. After the supercat, it was really loud, and very buzzy/raspy at certain RPM ranges. It was barely bearable with the windows up and the radio blaring, but under heavy throttle it really sounded ricey and unrefined. I decided to get a resonator welded in and see if the problem went away, and sure enough it sounds awesome again- pretty much the same exotic exhaust note as the SP2 alone, just a bit louder now... so it's perfect for me.

In addition to HIGHLY recommending a resonator (I can post the part# I ordered if anybody needs it), I also recommend you have the heat shield cut off (they added it to the redesigned cat for some reason)... mine had one of the cheap spot welds break causing an annoying vibration sound at certain RPMs.

As for the oft-debated missing hanger... even with the resonator installed, mine really doesn't seem to need it. It doesn't bang on anything, and when it was on the lift getting the resonator welded in, there didn't seem to be enough play in it even with excessive G's to make it bang anything.

Hope that helps... anyone in the Chicago area that wants to hear the combo let me know.

FWIW, at some point if you have to add a resonator, and a hangar you might as well get the SR Motorsports unit (http://www.srmotorsports.com/RX8_Per...tem_Parts.html) and have them put the resonator option on for you. No muss, no fuss. I had the unit and it was real nice, dynoed out at about 4-5 hp across the rev range. I agree that with the SR Motorsports unit (with the resonator in it) & the RB exhaust it was about perfect. With the RP Supercat it is a bit too loud for my taste. Now with the JIC Titanium it is still pretty loud.

My 02 cents. . . I installed the supercat with my Hymee almost 2 years ago.
About 6 months ago I started noticing a loss of power in high end. A trip to the dyno with a few other owners last January confirmed this. Trouble shooting began., intake fine, coils and plugs, fine, clogged cat. . .uh oh! Sure enough, the super cat clogged so badly I could see no light through it at all. Had it replaced with a fully stainless highflow.
So, just another thing to consider when purchasing the RP cat.
P.S. I had to put a resonator in line to temper the noise. All's well for the moment. . .

galleychief, how is your volume with the hymee and highflow w/ resonator? Did you run your hymee with the stock cat at all (as a comparison point for volume)?

I wonder if that premature failure is why they changed the cat design... I had heard about several of the SR cats failing, as well as the random tech, which is why I went with the RP.

Mine is still clean, maybe it is the gas people are using. I burn Shell V-Power or Chevron with Techron Premium only. I also have been running my CZ the whole time

Might be driving habits as well... I make sure I do a daily high RPM carbon clean

Volume is great. The Hymee with stock cat sounded sweet. When I opted to install the Bonz highflow cat it was just too much for the exhaust to handle. If I got on the throttle at all it was like mad bees in a coffee can or a civic with a fat tailpipe. . . The resonator toned it down perfectly.

I got the RP cat with B&B catback and it does sound real "ricey" past 3,500RPMs, I have no problem with it being loud just all that rasp is annoying. I purchased a Dynomax bullet race muffler(pretty much a resonator) and hope to install it soon.

That's exactly what I had welded into my supercat per MazdaManiac's advice... totally fixed the problem.

you can buy it anywhere, it probably won't last very long in terms of effectiveness in a rotary application, it may depend on how long you tend to hold WOT though ... try Jegs or Summit Racing

I would order a Borla XR-1 before that, at least it has stainless steel wool packing, the Bullet has the ceramic packing, I tried the so-called high temperature ceramic packing in a rebuildable muffler, it was fried to a nothingless crisp, the thing is it's not like one day its quiet and then suddenly its loud, you don't realize it got loud until after you rebuild/replace it.
