Does a sock on the AEM reduce airflow to the filter? I remember specifically not considering the AEM cause it might suck in water 
But I also have the unrational fear that water might suck up through the ram air duct and into my RB box too

i do have a sock now. obviously your reducing some airflow considering your covering the filter, but doubt it really makes a difference

If you think about where the placement of the RAM air is, that's an awful long vertical way for water to travel even if getting sucked in.

I shorted the MAF sensor in my Mazda3 with a cold air intake that ran low down in the car. It happened when I ran through an unexpected puddle on a freeway ramp in third gear at high RPM. I won't take that chance again. Years ago I had asked K&N how much I would lose with their Mazda3 intake ("Typhoon") with their sock over the filter. They replied with "not enough to notice" and "1 or 2 hp". Their website claims the Typhoon for the 2005 2.3L Mazda3 makes 5.74 hp.

I know a few people with the MSP/AEM intake. All of them had water issues (rain, car washes, etc.) at one point or another here in south Texas where rain is not abundant.
I just bought a used AEM but I am modifying it a bit to suit my needs.

Ive been in the same position. Not sure whether to go with RB or AEM. I prefer the AEM for its looks and sounds. Forget gains obviously wont get any with either one. If not a little bit. But im leaning towards the AEM, actually the MS. And when i get mine i plan on making some kind of secondary grill to block water cause i drive my car year round and i use the touchless car washes in winter.

I've had both intakes on my car and dyno'd higher with the Racing Beat but it was sooo close that it's within a margin of error.
it comes down to personal preference though. the RB will fit perfectly, look 'stock-ish' while the AEM leaves that part of the engine bay looking rather bare.
I switched to the AEM simply because the Revi Duct wouldn't fit well behind my new bumper but I made sure to pick up the intake tray box from BHR to make it look more 'complete'

IMO Intakes are waste of money and time you're better off saving a bit more and getting an AP, a mid pipe, or a few cases of premix.

Hey now I have a K&N panel filter! I always forget to list that. Anyone running a stock setup needs the K&N, just don't over oil it and get crazy.

Although I doubt the filter media played a part in the power you made.

I have the AEM intake and I've driven it through storms and mine is filly exposed behind an open grille. I don't know how but I've never had any problems. I do use the sock that came with it but that's pretty much it.

You dont drive it i winter do you?? thats the only thing worrynig me. I use the touchless car wash in winter and if it gets soaked and freezes its a no no for the engine. Thats what confuses me some people say they have no problems other say they have major problems.

Just got the Racing Beat intake used on Ebay for $260. I like the whole concept of the velocity stack inside the filter. Maybe it makes a difference, maybe it doesn't. But I've seen first hand on a flowbench testing motorcycle carbs that a straight open carb doesn't flow as much air as a carb with a velocity stack on the end.
