OBX-ARRRRH!!!! The Exhaust for Pirates is reviewed.

DAY ONE! It Arrives!

Don't mind the dog toys. :)

First off, it weighs 41 pounds.

So I decided to buy this exhaust since no one has really posted anything about it making it virtually unknown. I'm assuming because it's the "eBay special" from OBX. So I took the leap into the unknown and ordered it to tell you all about it. If I hate it, i'll just order something else. :D I mean, it was made in Korea so I'd wager it's about as well made as a typical Hyundai, no that's not a fair comparison...Kia!! Yes that's it, it's like the Kia of exhaust systems.

The first thing I noticed was that the walls of the pipe are a bit on the thin side so I know that noise suppression with this unit will not be as good as other units, but witha muffler THAT big it should be pretty good. The muffler has a dent in it from shipping, very small so I'mnot worried about it, nor do I care. The tips have a very slight angle cut to them and are nicely sized. The piping is 3in and the welds are actually pretty decent looking to me. I'm not a welder, but if I made these I'd be pleased. The muffler has very thin walls. It's definitly a "get what you pay for" thing as far as materials, but as long as it fits, looks good and sounds good(which I'm guessing it should) I'll be happy with it. The resonance chamber on it is large so I'd be surprised if there is any rasp.

The kit comes with everything needed to bolt it on, except everything that you need to bolt it on. What I mean is, they supplied NO bolts or gasket to hook the muffler to the pipe that goes to the midpipe. So I'll be taking that with me to the parts store tomorrow and matching it up with a high quality gasket and some good bolts.

On to the pics!

trustbuddy 05-25-2006 06:14 PM

let us know how it goes.
my hat off to someone who dares to venture into the unknown world of OBX exhausts....

supergoat 05-25-2006 06:22 PM

lol, yea. The exhaust is actually quite far from the shitty stuff people would have you believe it is, but it's no Borla.

But then again, it IS "World Class Championship Spec".

unreal89 05-25-2006 07:13 PM

what size is the piping/tips. I think its 3" tips with 2.5' piping, am i correct?

And thanks for doing this... I've always been curious about it.

jonyjoe 05-25-2006 07:47 PM

Cool....keep us posted with the outcomess....
Enjoy

staticlag 05-25-2006 08:40 PM

Do my eyes decieve me, or is this a tri exhaust configuration?

supergoat 05-25-2006 09:34 PM

That little penis that sticks out is a resonance chamber to quiet the exhaust down. :)

3in piping to the muffler. 3in tips. From the muffler to the tips it looks to be 2.5in, but since it goes from 3in to two 2.5in pipes it's not exactly a restriction. :)

BoosTED 05-25-2006 09:42 PM

I don't think I have ever seen something like that, with the chamber kicking off to the side before the muffler.

supergoat 05-25-2006 09:46 PM

The Knight Sport has it as well. This is basically just a copy of that exhaust.

zaglo6204 05-25-2006 09:53 PM

supergoat, i admire your willingness to sacrifice your reputation to onlookers (people who don't know the cause), your monetary fund, car... all for the larger rx8 community. you, my friend, are the man. have a great day.

supergoat 05-25-2006 10:16 PM

Yea, well I like to help. Wouldn't it be something though if it ended up sounding REALLY good?

I'm kind of hoping it does, granted it's the blacksheep of the exhaust systems, but then I'm also a fan of the underdog, otherwise I'll get a Borla. :)

I'm already confident that it will free up the 3-4hp usually achieved by exhaust from the simpler routing alone. At least the air has somewhat of a straighter path than coming in purpendicular to the muffler like the stock system.

LiL BenNy 05-25-2006 11:19 PM

wow talk about a team player!

And my Racing Beat Air Duct!! Ordered from Mazdaparts.com. They were so nice that they "upgraded" my package to 3-day select even though I "only" paid for 2nd Day air! w00t!!!
was this sarcastic? or a typo did you mean they upgraded your 3 day to a 2 day?

ddub 05-26-2006 12:44 AM

It really weighs 41 lbs? Poo, that's a disappointment.

swoope 05-26-2006 03:24 AM

supergoat,

could you put a tape measure behind the piping that will attatch to the cat or you midpipe... right after the weld.... it is so like the borla.... with the extention....

i feel you might be pleased,, but the borla is only 31lbs...

tip if you are going to put it on yourself.... on the rubber hangers white lithium grease is you friend....

one other ? was the rb duct drop shipped from racing beat?????

btw, thanks for the good work...

beers

Beodude123 05-26-2006 05:59 AM

You big tease. When it said reviewed on the title, I thought you had already put it on your car. Pooh. Let us know how it feels / sounds!

Definitly sarcasm. I paid for 2nd day, it was shipped 3-day. :(

swoope, you just want me to measure the flange where it connects to the midpipe?

maxxdamigz 05-26-2006 07:37 AM

Bust out the wrenches already! I want a sequel to RP cat vid. Did you say the cat was getting a little loud now that is broken in? New vid. Stop playing with the hamsters and dogs. Don't make me call Stacey.

Sidenote: PA meet 6/10 (RX-8) Allentown BBQ 6/7 (PGT) you going to either? I want to hit both.

supergoat 05-26-2006 07:44 AM

The PA meet is a bit far for me. The Cookout, I should be there, but will have to double check my scheduel. But if you are going(and I'm off) I may try to make the RX-8 meet.

And yea, the RP cat was getting a little ricey sounding, so I had a resonator welded in, sounds fine now. The exhuast will go on today as long as it stays dry outside, looks like it may rain a bit. :(

RA-Eight 05-26-2006 07:48 AM

Loved the initial write-up. Entertaining morning read. Good luck! I hope it doesn't rust on you. j/k. :)

smrx8 05-26-2006 09:13 AM

I have the headers and i must say im very happy with it no rust on my headers

dgrx8 05-26-2006 09:35 AM

headers

hey, did u get them dyno'd? i heard there was a small power loss w/ those. how do u feel about them??? & what setup do u have?

Hybrid-RX8 05-26-2006 09:43 AM

Hey..that's a knock off of my Fujitsubo Legalis exhaust

supergoat 05-26-2006 10:58 AM

How does it sound? I'm waiting for the rain to stop so I can go install this.

smrx8 05-26-2006 12:25 PM

I had other stuff on the car when i dynoed but i dont think we lost horsepower i believe i dynoed 247 with nitrous.

no the actual pipe dia. of the main tube running back to muffler.

supergoat 05-28-2006 11:01 AM

Day Two: It's On!!!

Sorry Swoope, I forgot to take a pic of that, but it's 3in.

Here are some pics. The video will be up later on today hopefully, if not tomorrow.

First thing, I KNOW the passenger side pipe is a bit off center. The picture makes it look a lot worse than it really is.

Install took about 1.5hrs. Not bad since it was my first ever RX-8 cat-back install. It went very smooth and the exhuast hangers came off very easily. The hardest part was separating the muffler from the long pipe. That clamp fought back...so I gave up and just removed it as one piece.

Install of the OBX-R exhaust was actually quite easy. The fitment was much better than I thought it would be and I was happy for that because I was NOT going to re-install the stock exhaust. I have too much pride for that. :mdrmed:

The Bad: I'll do the bad first since it's a surprisingly short list. The muffler sits up higher hitting the heat shield. No rattle is produced so I don't really care. The grounding strap is kind of...rigged...since the muffler just has a tab welded on and I didn't have a spare nut that fit the bolt for the strap. I'll fix that later. It's kind of wrapped around and tucked into hanger right now...but it's touching metal so it's cool for now.

The exhaust hanger on the long pipe is too short by about an inch so it's not resting in the hanger. Need to get that fixed soon, Tuesday most likely. The guys at OBX must have thought the differential doubled as a hanger as the end of the hanger rests right on the side of it. It doesn't rattle except at idle when the RX-8 does it's little bumpy idle thing it likes to do.

The Good: Other than the above mentioned things it fits very well. It looks great and install was a snap. I DID have to supply my own gasket and bolts, but that was a total of $16. Add that to the $20 I'll have to spend on getting the exhaust hanger fixed and I'm still at $400 SHIPPED for a stainless steel exhaust system. Not too shabby.

Now I'll get to the good stuff, the stuff you are waiting on...the sound. This is where I decided the fate of the exhaust. Will I keep it or order the Borla? Let me put it this way, the little resonance chamber does it's job. This exhaust sounds GOOD! When I went WOT I was at a loss for words.

Even though I would have been out $400, I REALLY wanted to hate this exhaust. I wanted to post here tell you all that it was raspy, loud and just plain sounded crappy. But it doesn't! I sounds fantastic! When I crank the car up, and at idle it sounds just like my old FC did. At crusing speed and part throttle is nice and deep and has a great tone. Drop the throttle and there is a bit of rasp for less than 1/2 a second around 4000rpm but then it just howls. The little bit of a hint of rasp comes and goes so fast you have to be listening for it to hear it. I honestly think someone at OBX messed up on this exhaust, OBX NEVER sounds this good.

It actually sounds very close to how my car soundsed in the video of my car with RP supercat and stock exhaust(before the cat got raspy). But a little deeper/louder, but really not by much. I will say that I DO have a Dynomax bullet muffler welded into the supercat pipe to act as a resonator and i'm sure that helps this exhaust sound nice, but regardless I couldn't be happier.

I think I'll keep this for a bit longer; I'll wait until this exhaust gives me a reason to swap it out.

So. The verdict(as if it's not obvious).

Am I happy? Yes, and add to that surprised.
Would I recommend it? Yes, but only if you go in knowing that you may have to spend a bit more money for bolts and getting the fitment perfect. MY experience has been great, but I also knew I'd have to probably spend a bit more cash to get it "right".

So for around $400 you can get a well built, great sounding, good looking exhaust that fits very close to perfect shipped to your door. It's surprisingly good.

Now I just have to install my Racing Beat air duct...but it's quite hot outside now. I'll do that tomorrow maybe. :)

maxxdamigz 05-28-2006 12:16 PM

No sound clip - you fail.

supergoat 05-28-2006 12:18 PM

Yar. :( It be commin up later matey!!

maxxdamigz 05-28-2006 12:34 PM

Avast ye lubber! Garner me the sound of de pipes or ye be walkin the plank sure enough!

Beodude123 05-28-2006 03:27 PM

Any difference in the butt dyno?

That muffler might be making a decent power subtraction... When they are far away (At the back of the car), they don't loose much power. When closer to the engine (hotter exhaust) they create more of a restriction... Just something to think about.

supergoat 05-28-2006 04:25 PM

Which muffler are you referring to? The dynomax bullet? If so, it's a straight through design so I don't see how it would decrease power. It's the same kind of design as the stock resonator and in the same spot, just a bit longer and 3in diameter.

The butt dyno has to be recalibrated, I reset the computer after installing it. So I'll know in a few days if it's "faster". :)

cornholio135 05-28-2006 04:53 PM

Thanks for the post this is the exhaust system i have been looking at for myself
based on the price for a stainless exhaust system...

arrrrr great write up mate.... and thanks for the measurment....

comments, i am shocked the did not include the bolts and gasket... that is so chicken shit.... you might call them and see if that is the norm. if not they might reimburse you...

i find the fact that you have a hanger issuse odd. could have it been bent in shipping???? these things are built on jigs, and if shipping did not do it they are all like that....

as to the fit above the muffler, the borla is very very close also... hopefully fixing the hanger will solve that probem...

beers

Beodude123 05-29-2006 06:11 AM

If it is straight though, I guess it won't affect power output much.

supergoat 05-30-2006 03:38 PM

Video!!!! :D

At one point a car drives by and it has a OBX front plate, I ask if you can see it and upon watching my mad tyte camera while driving skills it is apparant that you cannot. Oh well. Enjoy.

I will say that in person it is a bit deeper, but all in all this is a fair representaion of my exhaust.

http://www.thedailygoat.com/obx.wmv <--right click and "save as" please! Don't stream it. This is already going to make my bandwidth go to hell. I kept it at 35mb for good quality.

phxtravis 05-30-2006 06:38 PM

any chance of getting a drive by? or atleast some "out of car" throttle blips?

unreal89 05-30-2006 06:39 PM

yes, can you do a video of reving it in the drive way or something. I would like to know how it sounds outside the car. Please :)

supergoat 05-30-2006 07:19 PM

You guys are killing me!!! :p:

I'll see what I can do. :)

I just gave you an excuse to show off! you should thank me ;)

ddub 05-30-2006 11:15 PM

Pretty quiet setup with supercat/resonator/obx. I wonder what it would've been like without the resonator.

willofgod 05-31-2006 07:20 AM

I bet the secret to the sound is the dent you sustained in shipping.

maxxdamigz 05-31-2006 08:52 AM

I might mimic your supercat/bullet muffler combo after I hear it in person.

zenmoused 05-31-2006 09:27 AM

So you actually shot flames from this exhaust? Pardon my childish awe, but that's really cool!

Tim04rx8 05-31-2006 01:17 PM

You are causing me to want to mod my RX8 now...

BTW, I would extend my congrats to you, but I already have in another thread... ;)

supergoat 05-31-2006 01:45 PM

Yea, I heard the loud pop(my FC would do the same) and the lady pulled up and said "I think I just saw fire in your exhaust pipe". I said "neat!"

Tim. :)

Chris...it's a good combo. There is still a tid bit of rasp but once warm, it's gone. Adding this cat-back actually deleted everybit of rasp...once it's warmed up.

This is the only car I've ever owned that has to have the exhaust warmed up to sound good. It's odd. :)

maxxdamigz 05-31-2006 02:32 PM

Eh - I don't know about the OBX its self. Being an engineer, it might bother me on a religious level, but the midpipe setup with the resonator (muffler) sounds SMRT. Catbacks, from what I have read, don't really yield a lot in this car. I might pair it with something else and see what that turns out to be. I can't have my car being a clone of yours. That would be silly.

supergoat 05-31-2006 03:35 PM

I wasn't orgionally going to get a cat-back, was just going to get bigger tips welded on, but decided to bite the bullet and get this one so I could review for everyone.

If I was doing it again, I'd go for the Borla.

dgrx8 05-31-2006 05:30 PM

sounds pretty darn good... great clip!
but, u gotta get a shorter clip of ur car on the driveway w/o all that wind noise

bubbasuwannee 09-19-2006 07:07 AM

Still suggest this exhaust after having it for a while?

max5roadster 09-19-2006 10:43 AM

Funny you should ask.. I also pulled this thread up and reread it as I was going through Ebay last night. It seems like a fair deal.
