Anyone done any long term testing on the LS2 coils? I really do like the idea, but I seem to recall someone trying them once on the track, and they were great for a while but developed a crossfile when they got too hot. This needs confirmation, but worth the check. Not sure if a crossfile at 9000 RPM will do nice things to a rotor!

I'm also cognisent of the fact that in performance applications it is usual to have and additional "ignitor", even when the normal coils will work on a normal trigger.

Just food for thought. I'd hate for Ray to invest in lots of cables / harnesses only to be burned later.

Cheers,
Hymee.

Cool!

Crossfire is the inadvertant firing of a plug when it is not intended to fire, normally due to false triggering of the coils, or electrical energy induced from one plug lead to another.

Imaging if you were doing 9000 RPM and 14PSI of boost in the combustion chamber and it just "closed" and a spark intended for the other rotor fired at a critial moment way before top dead centre...

Missfire is different - it just means the spark didn't fire at all.

Cheers,
Hymee.

Gotcha.. so, it's like preignition but triggered by a spark instead.. Sounds like a bad day

Does the OEM RX-8 plug wire boot work with the LS1/2 coil or are going to have to hybridize the plug wires?

Wow I was just checking the prices on the MSD coils(summit racing) and new OEMs (rockauto), quite expensive I think you got a pretty awesome deal on the MSD coils, from searching ebay I think the bargin setup would be 2 people splitting a set of OEM coils on ebay, which seem to go around 200-250.

I think I will bite the bullet and order a set of 8 OEM coils from ebay later tonight after I get off work. Anyone want to split it with me?

I may take you up on that. Though I am still debating about having to relocate my coils from the stock position, I just ordered some magnacor 10 mm wires that will probably become useless if I can't fit the MSD coils in the stock location. Right now I would love the plug and play harness, I rather not cut into my nice virgin engine harness. (please say you will have them ready in next few weeks or so.)

I dynoed last fall stock and I had quite a bit of ignition issues 7k up, the car made around 170 HP at that time. Right now it only has a exhaust on it, I will go back and see what she dynos after the ignition upgrade. I plan to turbo it later this year, but I want to line out the ignition and upgrade the cooling first.

Blue,

I'm currently using my Magnecor 8.5 mm wires. You will have to manualy resize the ignition coil ends of the wires to make sure you have a good coil to wire contact. So far, no problems at all.

Nice, oneless thing to worry about. I found a new set of 8 delphi LS2 coils on ebay for 190+ shipping and see if I can sell the other half of the set on here. I will wait a few weeks to do the little project hoping that I some adaptor is released for the coils, if not I will just splice LS2 connectors as you did.

No problem. I called MSD. They do not sell directly to the public, which is too bad because vendors are marking up the set of 8 around $150. The best i've been able to find is $744 shipped. If anyone knows where I can find these cheaper, please tell me.
