K&N typhoon 2

So my friend is selling a used k&n typhoon intake and i've heard from some people that you lose power over stock. Also i was wondering how much sound it ads as i already have a HKS legamax.

You actually gain a bit of power, unless a hot day as the Typoon ingests engine bay air.

It's the loudest intake out there; significantly so.

I think I can speak for most here that you'd be better served with a true 'cold air' intake such as the AEM or Mazdaspeed. Or the Racing Beat intake with their ram air intake duct.

Flashwing posted some graphs some time ago showing why this intake is a waste of money

Don't do it. Save your 75 bucks and get either the AEM/MS or the Racing beat.

You could also just buy the Racing beat ram air duct and hook it up to the Stock intake.

save your money unless you really want a loud Hot Air intake.
RB + duct or MS/ AEM is the way to go.

Just keep your money and the stock intake. If it does not rain much where you live get the MS/AEM.

I've never had a problem with my MS intake and rain/water. I could see how it is possible though.

Can always modify the oem intake box by removing the baffles and get the rb duct.

As for the water issue with the AEM/MS intakes, I believe it comes from people washing the car in a car wash while the car is on and/or when someone drive through a deep puddle with it. Most people don't have issue. You always have the handful of people who think they are playing Oregon Trails and try to wade the water with the RX8 though.

Yes, without a doubt.

K&N makes some good products so it's not that the intake is designed or made poorly. The short ram design doesn't work well with this car (even the stock intake is a cold air design). High intake temps negate any gains you might see.

Also, the larger tube diameter messes with your mass airflow calibration causing you to run excessive fuel trims.

If you have to get something, just get an aftermarket drop in filter. The OEM intake is very well designed and can flow plenty of air.

^ Yep; I just mated the RB Ram intake to my stock airbox (VFAD removed) and dropped in a K&N flat filter. $185 new; less of course pre-owned.

How can losing horsepower and $40.00 be a good deal? And how would you pair it with the RB duct?

I mean if you are just buying the intake or exhaust for bling factor and just for the sake of modding for fun then I'm cool with that. Money comes and goes, I have blown as much money on drinking, table dances, computers, gadgets, tools, sports, etc. as I have on modding the many cars I have owned.

I just don't like people claiming butt dyno HP, just be honest and realistic.

You people are all idiots with the losing HP and all your other BS. $75 is a good deal for something that retails for over $300 new. I had the RB and had nothing but problems with it. First off the car idled horribly. Second my MAF was constantly getting wet when it rained which led to me having to clear CELs and clean the MAF during the rainey seasons we have here in the Northeast (AKA. Spring time). I love the sound of the K&N typhoon when I'm on the throttle. Secondly I have not noticed any loss of HP whether it be August or January. The car runs strong all year with no problems. I'll take the K&N "hot-air" intake over your crappy RB any day. K&N is a reputable company which made its name known by it selling aftermarket intakes. Buy what you want and do what you want don't listen to these idiots who probably can't change their own oil. Wow I feel better now!!!!

Wow. I could give a **** less about the RB, AEM, etc. IMO, they are all a waste of money (if you paid retail) if it is HP you seek.

First of, you love the sound, got it (kind of like putting a playing card on your bike tire as a kid). Second, You would not feel the loss of HP. Third, The K&N makes your factory cold air intake into a hot air intake. That is not debatable.

The issues with the K&N are well documented (search for mentioned data). And I can guarantee that most of the guys posting in this thread have way more wrench time in their 8's (and others, ) than you do.

Oh, and lets not ignore the fact that the RX8 race cars use OEM filters. K&N makes power but not enough to be of any significance and the poor filtering ability is a huge issue (for me at least).

I personally had a K&N intake and got rid of it. I now run the stock airbox with the walls removed, a dropin K&N filter and the RB duct. It accelerates smoother and the rough idle is gone. As for wrenching time let me know if you have ever removed and cleaned your SSV valve if you even know what that is...
