Fine fine, I'll finish you guys off... that sounds bad, I mean, I'll finish the install Saturday or Sunday now that I know what I need to do to take the stock cat off.

I'll see how the pipe runs without the hanger--I would think that is a long ways without any support-- amd see if there are any problems. Those who have this pipe, have you had any problems with the pipe with no hanger?

 

I'm personally considering going to a muffler shop (or some place that does welding) and having them weld a hanger onto the new one. If you live in a place with lots of bumps, you will hear it rattle and bounce around. It's not bad, but for peace of mind, I'd feel better if it had it.

 

Sorry guys, I think I am going to wait on installing this until I pickup my Greddy exhaust system which hopefully will be in about two weeks or so if all goes well. I figured it'll be easier just to install everything all at once.

Thirdeye, I am in California do you think I'll need to have a muffler shop add a hanger? Do you think it'll cost that much to get this done?

Well I personally don't know what the roads are like out in CA but here in PA they freakin blow. Even the highways aren't great but I don't have much trouble there. Its the roads through town that are fairly rough that causes the annoying rattle. If I had a stiffer suspension it would probably drive me insane from the rattling.

I haven't gotten a price yet but I can't see it being more than $50-$75.

Well, this was the 2nd time I tried to start my project to install the Greddy exhuast and my RP supercat pipe, and again I failed to even begin. I got my car up on the jacks and I still don't understand how to get everything off, mostly the hangers. Where do you guys think I should start? I need step by step guides on how and where to take things off. I still have no idea how to get the hangers off, I can't get the rubber over the head. HELP!

 

First, you need to lubricate the inside of the rubber hangers so that the "peg" can be slid out of the hole easier given some force. I've always used a soapy water mixture in a spray bottle so I can get it where I need it... but a mineral-based spray lubricant would work good to. Then you can either buy a tool that forces the hanger out... looks kinda like a big fork, or do it the old fashioned way with a big screwdriver- you stick it through the hole parallel to the hanger peg, then use the screwdriver as a lever as you push the exhaust the other direction. I had to take off the plastic exhaust surrounds to give me room to work under there.... the first one took me a while, then once I got the hang of it the rest only took a few minutes each.

Once you've figured out the hangers, the rest is cake...

 

I don't understand where I put the screw driver. Also, this big fork you talk of, is it somewhat of a shorter crowbar? I think my Dad tried to use it today, and it was working pretty well, just we didn't use any lube.

Anyways, which hole are you talking about for the screw driver? For example, today when I was trying to do one of the exhaust hangers, there is the top hanger that is welded to the body, and then the bottom hanger which is welded onto the exhuast, and then there are two openings in the middle between those two hangers on the rubber. Do I stick it there or where should I stick the screw driver?

 

No- there's a couple tools I've seen- the fork-style pliers that help push the hanger out of the rubber:

Either way, lubing the inside of the rubber piece is the key. The hole you need to work is the lower one, where the hangers attached to the exhaust/midpipe/cat go into. My method is to lube the hell out of the hole, stick the screwdriver in from behind and all the way through the hole (so it's sharing the same path as the metal hanger peg), then while pushing the exhaust/midpipe/cat away from the rubber hanger, use the screwdriver as a lever to force the hanger peg out of the hole.

It's hard to describe... but I hope that helps some...

 

I just installed my rp supercat pipe and greddy sp2 exhaust! Wow, it took about 2 hours to get the stock stuff off, and then 30 minutes or so to put everything on. I absolutly LOVE it. Exactly what I was looking for. It is agressivly loud when you get on the throttle, but when cruising, you have no idea that you have it on. Don't know about HP gain or anything, I wasn't really paying attention to it, just the exhaust note. I love it! Pictures are coming soon!

Yeh I noticed that, I think I hit it on one of my friends drive way. He has a very steap drive way and I hit it probably. That was the last time I went into his drive way. lol

 

You just lifted 1 side up with 2 jackstands during the whole installation?

The cat seems to mellow out after 1,000 miles or so a bit...

I didn't have dents there but my stock cat was beat to hell when I removed it. Freaking roads around here just suck for low vehicles.
