Just purchased Rotary Performance "Supercat" Pipe

Well, after about 2-3 weeks of research and a lot of questions, I finally just put in my order for a Rotary Performance "Supercat" pipe.

I was debating between the Supercat and the straight through midpipe. I wanted to midpipe because I loved how much additional volume it gave to the exhaust, but living in California, I did not want to even risk my chances of having a non-cat pipe.

Hopefully the Supercat will still give the exhaust that additional volume and won't "muffle" it too much from what the midpipe can produce, but we will see in about a week or so.

The pipe will hopefully add around 7-9HP from what Nemesis8 dyno'd and I'm excited to get this on. This will be going on with my stock cat-back system, until in about a month or two, I will buy a new cat-back system. (Greddy, B&B, Racing Beat, I don't know!)

I know I could of gone for a better route of $$/HP ratio, but I really wanted to intensify the 8's exhaust sound to the highest level I can push it, while adding some performance/HP.

Rotary Performance shipped the Supercat Pipe out today. According to UPS, the pipe should be here the 5th of May!

For those who installed this pipe, is there anything I should know before I install this? Will I need to put the car on 4 jack stands or can I just use two? Is it hard to take off? Will I have any problems? Let me know, thanks!

I've been looking into getting this, but i've got the Greddy turbo. I just recently received my emanage support tool and loaded mazdamaniacs map. It's running good. I will get my supercat once I've found somebody that can tune the emanage correctly.
The only install problem I've read about is that it doesn't come with a hanger like the stock one. RP left it off, since they thought it was light enough to not move. But other owners have posted it hits some areas without the hanger holding it in place.

I will take a look at the hanger when I install it. I will see how it is without the hanger, and if there is any problems with it, than I will try to install a hanger myself.

I will keep you guys updated. I will take pictures of the piece itself when it gets here, and when I install it.

I don't expect much of a HP gain because I will still have stock exhaust system. In a month or two, I will be getting the Greddy most likely, so I'll also do a DIY on that if no one has done the exhaust system DIY yet.

I'll do a small review with how it feels and sounds with stock exhaust.

I'm taking my car to Mazsport on Monday to have the GReddy turbo installed along with the RP Supercat. Hopefully Scott will be able to tune it up right, and I will be able to offer up any tips at that point.

I'd really like that map if he gets it to work correctly.

I just went to Ricks Rotary today in Peteluma to check out his RX-8. He has been working on rotaries since 87. He had about 4 RX-7's in his shop and then 3 others outside. He only has 1 RX-8, which is one of his daily drivers (drives two other RX-7s) and at the time he added the RP Supercat, Greddy Turbo, and RB Exhaust. He has the REVi intake there, but he's trying to make it work with the Greddy Turbo.

He is a very knowledgable in rotaries, and even though the drive is 30 minutes to get there, he is a person I would trust with me car.

Anyways, I heard the RB with the RP Supercat and I liked it. I was looking for something louder, so maybe the Greddy SP2 exhaust will give me a more distinct and louder exhaust sound, although I loved the low rumble the RB produced.

I should be receiving the pipe Thursday. I can't wait to get this installed, probably Friday or Saturday I'll work on the car and take pictures. Oh yes, I talked to Rick about the hanger, and he said that I do not need to weld on a hanger because the cat is so light compared to stock.

Can't wait! I'll keep you guys posted.

Today was great, I came home and noticed a box sitting in my garage, yep the RP Supercat pipe came! Along with it, I also got my paycheck and I sold my car speakers/amp! Great day!

Anyways, I am waiting for the car to cool down before I go and install it, I was so excited that I totally forgot that I was driving the car for a while and went to put the cat on, touched the stock piping and yeah, lets just say it was hot! I learned the hard way.

Anyways, here are some pictures I took before installation, I'll update this thread and my cardomain page throughout the install!

Congrats on your purchase. This really is a nice cat. Perfect fit. RPerf. says this is a bonez cat design. I want to hear some clips with the stock exhaust if you can get some. With the Rbeat exh it sounds goood!

Well some bad news, I have no idea how to get the stock cat off. It seems to me that the hanger is welded onto my stock cat pipe, is there a way to get this off or do I need to break the weld or how do I go about doing this? I'm going to have to wait til the weekend now to install this, blah!

Welded.....

The metal arm is welded, the rubber needs to slide off it. The best way is to find some silicone lube. If you are out, Pledge works, it's mostly silicone. Work a small screwdriver in the hole to get the lube inside, twist around, should come off.

Wait, so that rubber thing is the only... oh wait, I think I understand now. Cause there two "pipes" that was in the rubber, one of them went with the one welded onto the stock cat, and the other pipe led to be welded onto the body of the car I believe. We thought that it was a alen wrentch screw. So what we need to do is just pull the rubber over the "head" (which we thought was a screw) and it will be free?

Yep -- helps to use a lubricant like WD-40.

Lol, I'm debating if I want to wait on installing this until I get my Greddy exhaust. I think it would be a lot easier to install everyone just in one shot because from what I've heard from a guy who installed it with his stock, there is little sound different, if any at all, with stock exhaust. But, it's going to be 2-3 weeks until I get my Greddy though lol, decisions decisions.
