can someone help me shed some light on this;

im about to get an intake and im debating between short ram or CAI. i know short ram offers better low end torque because of shorter piping but my question is that since its sucking in air from the engine bay instead of from the front bumper like a CAI, will it affect the life of my engine in the long run? i was thinking K&N typhoon 2, it seems like the most reliable choice for a ram.

K&N will suck a bit of hot air when the car is not moving, but as soon as you're moving, cold air will come in from the front and blast them right into the K&N. No problem with water.

CAI kept its filter out of the engine bay area, sounds good, but when idle, the radiator right behind the filter ... still gonna suck some kind of hot air in, not gonna be as bad as K&N tho. filter mounted from the side so air will not go into the pipe directly. another thing is that CAI cannot withstand too much water. especially if u blast the water directly at the filter(car wash) or going thru some puddle of water.

I have both so I know

ahh thanks

also,

Ive heard mixed things about this, but is it true due to a CAI's longer piping that it saps low end power because it takes longer for air to get to engine and it burns more rich then lean

i know short ram has small piping in order to get maximum amount of air into engine at the fastest rate

and since you have both which would you recommend, im trying to get some more low end grunt out of my 8 since it performs so well in the higher rpms(gotta love the Rotary) but i also dont want to deteriorate at my engine

thanks

Magikone69: i bought the direct fit Simota Carbon Charger intake for the 8 from RX8strakes.com they had listed on ebay. 2 years ago,I had the K & N short ram intake (1st gen) on my car, took it off after 6 months because of heat in the engine bay, imo makes it lose performance, esp in the summer, went back to the stock intake with drop in K&N intake. Until today!

This thing is awesome, great sound, great throttle response, does remind me of the short ram intake, however, not as loud. it has a small horn on the front of the intake, of which i am going to duct throuh my front with a flex duct kit. But for now will run it as is.
it was an easy install. all the parts necessary in the box. CF matched my hood and other CF parts. no complaints as of yet, no CEL. Drove around for an hour or so, playing dropping it from 3rd to 2nd at around 4500 rpm, the jump to 8k gives a growl and a throaty roar from under the hood as well as through my RB exhaust.

I'm actually the first one to have this now production intake on the RX8. Awesome intake!!
I will be making a Thread about it soon to talk more about it. They definitely deserve tons of credit for this design and functionality of it. Keep an eye out for my review. I have only had it on for just over a week and plan on giving it a few hardER runs this week and will post my unbiased, truthful, open, honest thoughts about this intake!
A teaser tho...couple fellow rx8club members have heard it WOT and love the sound That goes twice over for me!

Sorry to steal your thunder Thumper but you have the first production intake on your car. I actually had the pre-production on mine. The photo with the crummy lighting is actually is after we installed it a few months ago. I'm going to pick up my production intake this weekend, and man does it look good.

I've gotta agree with everything you're saying. The intake sounds amazing, at all RPMs! I had a chance to really push the it with the pre-production intake and in ran amazing, no issues. It really is a solid design.

I'll save the rest of my comments for after a pick up the production kit and you start up your thread.

I don't know why people are saying that if you run into a puddle it will screw up... It wont. It only get's bad for the CAI when the road is nearly flooded with water. It's extremely exxagerated and only bad in what I said before and a Crazy Storm.

i had the k&n too...what a POS, sucked nothing but hot air and my throttle response was horible under 5k.

any more info on your carbon charger intake, im very interested now, i loved the sound of the 1st gen umnitza intake, sounded aggressive and others seemed to like the general performance. Im more interested in getting a great sound than performance gains (which i usually think is the case with most intakes.) id rather gain nothing but great aggressive sound than to loose/trade off throttle response or low/id/high end power. Do me a huuuuuuuuuge favor, drive around for a while and let the newness of the intake wear off and can you get back to me either here or PM and let me know how you still like it. Do you have any clips of the sound or any other pics installed. thanks for your response and help.

Just curious as to when you think you will be writing this thread. I have been keeping up with this PRM intake and it sounds pretty bad ***. I'm thinking about going for it along with the RB air duct? seems like a good combo! Any opinions?

Today/tomorrow. I think that would be a great setup. Definitely go for it! I am going to see if I can make a video of the sound of it to include.

Well let me know when you get that done man! I'm excited to see what you really think about it, it will help me make a better informed decision if I go through with it. Just out of curiosity, would there be a better setup with something else if not the RB air duct? What do you think?

thanks for the help

Magikone69, remember the loud harmonics of the K & N short ram intake? this one is very close, but has the lower throatier sound. i am waiting for the temps around Oklahoma to get up around the 90's to tell if the heat will affect this like the KN one. I dont think it will because of the CF charge tube, and the design of the inlet horn so close to the intake tube in the front of the car. i will post some pics and a video this week for the sound.

so far, i am still very pleased with this intake.

Im between the CAI from aem and the revi intake with the air duct. Ive read that theCAI sucks up water which kinda makes me not want to buy it. Has anybody had serious problems with the CAI? I figured water would still get into the revi if it has the air duct.

Has Thumper3322 posted his thread on the PRM cai?

I figured water would still get into the revi if it has the air duct ?? how?? Never had that problem in two years. It's a little more money than most but you will never regret unless you plan on going FI.

I just can see how water could go up the duct and into the intake. The only thing I want to avoid is sucking up water, if I didn't have that issue I would have already bought the CAI becuause I can get it for $230
