Intake Idea (K&N Pipe With Stock Box, Plus Ram Air)

Okay, so I just added the Racing Beat ram air duct to my otherwise stock intake. Liking it so far, and have been looking at a bunch of numbers with torque. I do have a K&N intake sitting around that I've been eyeing. Here is my thought; take the air horn out of the stock box, cut the MAF section off, make the hole the right size for the K&N piping, and attach the pipe and air horn to the stock box.

That way it would have a full air horn, instead of the partial for stock. I would have filtration of paper filters, and the ram air of the duct. Yes, I realize getting the air box out after that would be a little troublesome (probably just remove the TB), but I think it could do a lot of good.

As far as the ram air duct, I am going to have my friend make an adapter for the stock airbox to the duct, so it's a smooth transition. Right now I have part of the VFAD stuck on the duct and sealed up with window flashing. I know it's not the best, but it worked in a pinch haha.





So, I am wondering what the pros think of this? Maybe Rotary God can chime in...

what you described is exactly like this...



look for one used...

or just leave your stock intake box with the Revi Duct and remove the 2 walls from your stock box and call it a day... the hack job you described will not give you any gains...

The reason I want to use the stock airbox is because I don't want to use K&N filters.

Neither do any of the other intakes really. So what is there to lose?

the AEM shows some gains, especially if you add an exhaust and tune accordingly...
I wouldn't go through all the trouble of building a custom box like the one you described "just 'cause". Stick to the OEM box + rb duct.

No, I want to keep paper filters for engine longevity, and that's why I don't necessarily go with AEM. That would be my choice of aftermarket intakes though. I've been on here more than long enough to know that. :P

sorry buddy, just re read your post and i realize what your trying to achieve.

but i wouldnt bother, just get the racing beat or the aem (which i just installed, noise is amazing)

i doubt there is any reason a stock paper filter would be more beneficial for engine longevity than an aem or racing beat intake

Racing Beat uses a K&N intake filter for their systems, and is the main reason I don't want them.

K&N air filter or OEM, why OEM is better

Here is a pretty good test done to show the difference between air filters. I'd like to keep my engine for as long as possible, and if keeping junk out of the engine helps with that, I'll do what I can to make sure that doesn't happen.



I've been doing a lot of datalogging with the stock box and ram duct I have right now. When I take the ram duct off to make a good pipe to connect it to the airbox, I'll do a stock airbox comparison, and then when I do my hack job I'll take some more numbers. This way at least I can have solid numbers to see if it's slightly better, not just by the butt dyno.


Besides, I like to tinker, I have time to do these things, and I have all the parts! I'd rather spend $300 on an AccessPort for some real power than on an intake that will give me minimal gains.
