Given proper care, how many miles does an aftermarket turbo stay good. I take good car of my car, royal purple in tranny and diff, change oil every 1500. What else do I need to do for long lasting turbo. Also, what about driving long distances (300- 500 miles in a day)

It depends on how long before you start mucking around with the boost controller and blow some seals. Honestly in my opinion I'm not fond of the turbo they use in the Greddy kit, I prefer bearing turbos. Other than that I don't see much turbo related problems if you get it tuned properly.

 

All that I know is, that there are a good bit of RX7 owners left with their turbo's and engines intact, so who knows. when you're cruising you aren't gonna be under much boost, so you should be cool for a long time

 

FYI, make sure to let your turbo cool off before turning off your car. Its an oil cooled turbo, so your car needs to be running to let it cool down.

If you are driving lightly, 30 seconds should be enough... but if you have been boosting hard, give it a few minutes.

This should help extend the life of your turbo a bit.

Would a profec boost controller let me do that kinda tuning?

 

And remmber every ten minutes burns a gallon of gasoline.

So idling 4 times a day for 4 minutes will get expensive.

Keep the recomendation from Greddy for the boost, don't go higher.

Always keep in tune. Hope for 80,000 miles.

I've noticed the oil temp actually increases as it sits and idles. I was sitting in traffic yesterday on my trip to San Luis Obispo, and noticed the temp rise from 90 to 100c. Also I had my timer set up for 2 min, and watched the temp rise, instead of cooling off. Should I let it sit longer, cause it seems like its defeating the purspose.

 

No, letting it sit for longer will not help it cool down. Your oil coolers rely on forced air (from driving) to help them cool. Sitting still they are still being heat sinks, but obviously their effectiveness has been over come by the heat producing capabilities of the rx8's oil system.

 

Your overall oil temp will increase, but the behind the turbo timer is to cool the turbo off. Otherwise, the bearings are still super-heated and don't have any oil flow to cool them down. While I'm running a slightly different kit than the Greddy, I'm still getting 1550*F temps right behind the turbine at crusing speed. It takes a minute or so for the temp to come back down.

I think the cooling system is plenty for a turbo 8. Obviously we'll have more experience with that here in Florida in the next couple of months, but I have never seen oil/water temps over 220*. (oil temp taken @ oil filter and water temp @ thermostat)

Who says that 10 minutes will burn 1 gallon of gas? Assuming 20mpg, @80mph you'll cover 13 miles in 10 minutes. That's .65g @ 4000rpm. Not even taking injector pulse length into account, a motor idling @ 1000rpm would burn .16g in 10 minutes.
