So I am going to buy a GTECH. I suppose I will use it mostly as a poor man's dyno and have very little desire to course race with it. I am pretty sure I should get the SS model instead of the RR model. Anyone want to give me any advice, especially if you have either one of the units. I assume the best place to buy it is from gtechpro.com. They list 199 and 299 for the models.

 

I've used the old style, its a pain in the *** to calibrate, so I would go with the newer one. The passport version is also suppose to be good, and is a little cheaper.

 

That is a tough call. The RR model is $100 more but it also allows you to download the runs to your computer and compare them side by side. This is great if you want to see if a mod actually made a performance gain. Plus you also get the road race functions as an added bonus.

FYI - I've been using a Gtech Pro Competition and just upgraded the firmware to make it a RR.

 

yeah after looking all night i might want to get the comp model for 250 and then and upgrade it to RR functionality. I think i will call around morrow and c if anyone has the older unit in stock.

i do not think the road race function gets me anything, but i like the option to have four cars and the PC thing adds a good bit of functionality.

 

You can get the Comp model on ebay for ~$120... but you can kiss the warranty goodbye. Worth the risk? Not sure... My ebay comp model started throwing error codes before I could get the first run done! Prior to that, it was easy and intuitive to calibrate and set-up.

 

Well I'll be! It (the new firmware) did finally come out! After a year of hearing "soon" it finally hapenned. And the Pass2 software looks a little better too. Who woulda thunk it?.

I'll even get a chance to try it out this weekend since we have a auto-x event.

If yer looking top buy now your cheapest bet is a Comp Pro model off ebay that will then upgrade to the RR version firmware fer free. Dont bother with the original model unless all you want is drag strip basic measurements.

Forgot to mention, Dynamic Turbo here in Miami has the Comp model for 250 new. Can order off their website.

 

Being able to graph on the unit it self and download to the computer is definitely worth it. I bought the Pro Competition model for that reason. The PASS software is also more accurate than the software in the Gtech unit for plotting your curve and peak power. The Passport product only has 2 accelerometers in 2 axis so you have to calibrate it on a flat surface and make sure it doesn't move once it's on the windshield. The 3 accelerometers in 3 axis on the Gtech eliminate this need. You still have to tighten it down but it is much more tolerant of position drift or vertical motion.

For what it's worth I like it.
