Question GReddy Turbo upgrade service from RX-7 Store?

Has anyone purchased the turbo upgrade for the GReddy turbo kit from the RX-7 Store? ( http://www.rx7store.net/category_s/292.htm ) If anyone has, I'd like to know their experience with it. At $1050, it sounds like a good option for those of us with the GReddy kit. I'm seriously considering it since the kit's original turbo seems to be such a turd...they seem to just have thrown that kit together in a big rush without adequate testing. GReddy could have (and should have for the price) done better. They could have done better on the couplers/reducers too. I just discovered mine were tore-up and leaking air, leading to stumbling and boost creep at high RPM...causing me to bang my head on the wall trying to figure it out. The cracks were not on the visible side, had to remove them to see it. One was just tore wide open. I haven't noticed this upgrade being discussed on the forum, so if it has been, my apologies, and please let me know.

You have to send them your core to rebuild, and they claim a 10 day turn-around on it.

Here is the description of the service:

This is what you get with the BNR Supercars hybrid:
upgraded 360 thrust kit for ultra high boost applications
upgraded compressor wheel (58 lb/min)
custom machined Greddy compressor housing
clipped turbine wheel
ported wastegate
ported volute
Dynamic balanced to .5 gram/in2 or less
All new center housing rotating assembly
water cooled center housing
water cool kit
1 year warranty
The turbocharger comes ready to reinstall. All you will need a coolant source!

well you can blame greddy for inadequate testing but you also have to blame yourself for inadequate researching before you installed your greddy turbo with the couplers it came with...there is a ton of helpful info on this site in regards to the greddy kit and making it reliable.

Konig, you're right (kicking myself in my own ***).. But I got it right when it came out, expecting it to be a quality product. It was my first experience with an aftermarket FI kit. I don't think they are known for doing what they did with this kit..I believe they usually make quality products. It's not that terrible a kit, but I wish they'd took more time instead of rushing it.

And how about that upgrade? Do you know anything about it?

I like your moves.

Also Race Roots has one too - but it is not oil/water cooled... so I like the BNR one better. IMO the Oil and Water cooling alone makes it worth it reliability wise - the extra power is just a really nice bonus.

Sounds like a great solution to me. Keep me posted on what your experience is with it. What boost do you plan to run? I'm probably going to go ahead with this very soon too.

I think I'll do that. I checked out your thread about your car, looks like we got a lot of the same stuff. I'm hoping to get this thing straigtened out soon. Sitting in the garage tonight, with all the turbo piping tore apart. Going to replace all the couplers/reducers. Man, the one reducer on the intercooler looked like hell. The one that was on the pipe that connects to the throttle body was ripped and leaking severely...the one on the far end...the reducer. I was about to go mad trying to figure out why my car was running like **** so bad and the boost just could not be controlled. Live and learn.

By the way, thanks for civility...I've been really tempted to never visit this site again on more than one occasion because of the know-it-all car snobs on here. More often than not I get some smart *** comments when I ask a question, or post about what I'm experiencing. I don't see the need in all that, really no excuse to just be rude. But I've always been a helper and cooperative...I guess it is just not in the personality of some. But to me, if someone doesn't have something constructive to say, then why both saying any damn thing at all. Charles (BHR) is a super-nice guy. I like dealing and talking with him. He's got my BHR ignition coming soon! Can't wait to get that. I think my coils are for crap.
