AB Greddy Exhaust - Popping When Shifting

Hey All,

I just bought a used RX8 (2005) with an aftermarket Greddy exhaust. Interesting thing: it "Pops" when I accelerate hard and then shift.

Is that normal?

mine does it too. you should have someone follow behind you at night. i bet you shoot some nice flames out. you might not have a catalytic converter also.

I have the GReddy SE exhaust on my car... just put it on last summer... with any aftermarket exhaust on the RX8 you get some nice back fire... even with a Cat. Without a cat you will shoot flames if your car is running hot enough... It's just a sweet Rotary thing

Sweet. It causes an instant "Check Engine" light though with a Cat code. *grin*

Thanks for the reassurance!

This might be an indication of misfire. How many miles does the car have? Have you ever changed spark plugs, wires, and coils?

It hasn't had 4206F and it's in this week for the work. I suspect that's the issue.

Used, 2005 GT with 76K.

Dunno if it has a cat or not, but I presume it does. Dealer didn't mention anything when it went in for it's post-purchase checkup (bought it from a non-Mazda dealer...first thing, straight to the pros) and "missing catalytic converter" would be something they'd notice I think...

Nice to know that CEL w/ Cat is something to pay attention to even with the exhaust.

Thanks.

Anyone know the exact reason why when we have an open exhaust our 8's go pop,pop when we shift?

I think it is due to the incomplete burn of fuel in the combustion chamber. The combustion chamber in a rotary isn't as 'efficient' as that found in a piston engine and the pop is the fuel in the exhaust system being ignited.

I think.....
