Fuel Pump Removal Issue

I am doing some fuel upgrades and tonight i went to remove my fuel pump but ran into a snag. As I spun the o-ring with the Mazda tool I noticed the little black retaining clips (the screw driver tip is pointing to it in the picutre below) were not allowing the ring to release and was just spinning with it. So after discussing the issue with some people smarter then myself they suggested that the tank neck my have broken loose. I only had one option which was to cut the ring off. Well after the ring was cut off I inspected the tank neck was not damaged at all....

So I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else and if so were you able to still use the tank

ive always used the chizzle technique with 4lbs+ hammers
my issue is that i cant get the tank to fully seal anymore since i have removed it 18+? times
now that nearly all my tabs are gone i went ahead and bought a new gasket and oring

my suggestion is when you go to replace the oring
grease everything up with something that is petrollium based or can be disolved with fuel
including the gasket and 0ring and tank neck
when reinstalling it put pressure on the top of the pump
this will allow for higher torqueing of the oring

from your picture it just looks like the pump is rotating wiht your oring
the tabs arent really strong enough to stop you from opening the oring its really only there to stop vibrations from losing the oring

before you restore everything put the oring on as tight as you can
let the car warm up without the cover or seats inplace
drive around and fill her more then 1/2 way
then listen for the quack sounds (air leak) then witness for any fuel coming out
if no quaks or fuel then your good however at this point i suggest retighten as the tank becomes softer (including the oring) when the exhaust heats up the area.

For some reason Mazda Had all the replacement parts I needed IN STOCK. I also found out that the tabs that hold the white o-ring are attached to another ring that actually has the threads on it. That ring is actually split on one side and from the looks of it could actually spin. So the results are; the tank is not damaged, I purchased a new thread ring and white o-ring.

Now all I need to know is where the venturi valve is on the 09 pump and I want to make sure that the thick wires in the stock wire harness plug are power wires for the pump (I would assume they are)... if they are why are they aligning with the 09 pump top?

Jeff can you please expand on your response... cut the tabs on the retaining tabs on the siphon tube? Where is the location of the fuel pumps ventury connection?

No - Cut the black plastic tabs that retain the fuel pump hold-down "O"-ring.
I can't comment on the '09 pump - I haven't modified one for the Walbro (not worth the effort, time or money).

If you can make a friend at the dealership they will let you borrow their fuel pump removal tool.

Jeff: There's really no danger in cutting the retaining tabs off? They don't really help the retaining ring stay on?

Well, no guarantees, but mine has been gone for two years with no issues.

is that big black o-ring that goes right under the white plastic fuel module little bigger than the groove it sits on? errr mine's killing me. it doesn't look like it's going to seal properly if i tighten it down.
