We get lots of 5 speed 8s imported from Japan here in NZ . They come with the 4 port motor (low hp) - a real trap if you don't do your homework.

yeah but thats there. I am 99.9 % sure that they NEVER brought a 5 speed here. if you have one someone imported it.... although I dont know why someone would do that. there is NO advantage to it. the cost to import it would be higher then the 6 speed. not to mention you could never register it here.

........ I dont know what to say Cosi.

Hi Cosi, I am from Greece, I also have the 5 geared MT 8 and I have changed flywheel with one from Exedy.
All brands that fit the 6sp MT will fit the 5sp. Except ONE. Mazdaspeed.

So don't worry except you want the MS flywheel. Hope that helps.

Another question to all. When I installed the cluth flywheel combo which is supposed to be lighter, I noticed -after the break-in- a definite increase in responsiveness and harder pulls so ofcourse I was excited. After a few days though it didn't feel the same. Is it my butt dyno that went numb or is the ECU somehow compensates to the new data?

Just had my ACT Prolite (+ ACT clutch) fitted & have some before & after 0-60mph times as measured on G-tech . Tests done at 15deg C ambient with 1/4 - 1/2 tank of gas .

Best time pre flywheel - 6.33 s
Best time with Prolite -6.08s
Some rough calculations suggest about 2 car lengths improvement.

I have found the car harder to drive with this FW/clutch combo & it is generally not as smooth as stock for around town use.
I would still do the flywheel again but with the stock clutch .

Edit : I mistakedly put down 0-100km/hr times but have realised my G-tech is actually 0-60mph .

Did 3 complete runs - first two were 6.21 & 6.24 then after a couple of bad launches I realized the DSC was still on - DUH ! Last and best run was only one without DSC . By that time the smell of burning clutch was getting a bit much

Put the ACT Heavy duty clutch in . Clutch is feeling a little better now after creaming it with those runs this morning
Two other observations -

I have developed a rattle from 2500-3000 rpm in 3rd 4th 5th & 6th . Could be something loose - hope its not the clutch springs .

My gas consumption suddenly has improved - all I have done is clutch/flywheel + several dyno runs . Does not make sense .

i was going to go with the standard act clutch. would like to hear more about the hd feel after you have driven it a couple of days...

the rattles, only in the 3 - 6 gear is odd... does it sound like it is coming from the bellhousing area???? if so my first guess would be a throw out bearing that was dislodged on the install... or loose exhaust or the ppf rail...

as to better gas mileage makes no sense, but i hope you are right...

I already have about 450km on the clutch & I think it has bedded in as much as it is going to.
It does feel better now but the gearchange from 1st to second is not as smooth as stock.
It also takes up closer to the floor & i have found myself reving too much (especially on a slight incline) when taking off if I don't concentrate - if I adjust the pedal up it may improve this . The light fly does require a few more revs for a smooth takeoff & that in combination with a clutch that grabs faster makes the car more difficult around town.

1 to 2 change not as smooth because the revs drop to fast? or just not clean...

sound like you need to adjust the pedal... clutch not releasing all the way...

the rattle has me worried...

1-2 change - not sure what is happening - just feels clunky

I'll try adjusting the pedal & see if that helps with the feel of it. I'll let you know.

rattle - hmm you got me worried now !
I'll take it back to installers as soon as I can

Ahhhhhh - thats better !!!!!!
Just adjusted the clutch pedal so it enguages further out from the floor . Makes it much easier to control . Not as easy as stock but not enough to complain about now .
The 1st to 2nd is good now also - thanks swoope .

Rattle still there

It is harder to depress for the first 1/3 of its travel but doesn't seem any harder to hold in than stock . I'm already used to it & its not an issue.
However if you aren't planning on doing lots of drag racing or upgrading to turbo - i think you are better off with the stock clutch.

our group did a total of three flywheel installs and got one with the rattle your talking about. Our thoughts were along the exhaust line. Haven't got back under there to check it though to confirm or deny it. It is not on my vehicle, but from what I've seen, it seems to happen more at start up....but then again, it is not my vehicle, so maybe Speeddemon can respond to give you his impressions.

As for clutch/flywheel combo from ACT, Cesaralaniz did the combo and likes it....I drove it right after the install and was the only one of the three of us who didn't stall it on the initial launch in first. But my stock clutch has always had a different feel from any other 8 I have driven. Hearing that you adjusted you clutch peddal engagement makes me think this may be the difference, that maybe mine was adjusted differently. Most people who drive my car think I have an aftermarket clutch, and I don't.

yeah I am the lucky one with that ebarissing rattle. I have yet to get under the car to take a look as I dont drive the car a whole lot and I forget untill I am driving it. It sounds to me like one ove the heat sheilds did not get put back in correctly. one of these days I will get under there and take a look. I will post what I find.
