you are correct with a point. yes some people would want some weight on the out side edge, this would include people that would want to retain some drivability. but if you are wanting the car to retain some drivability, why not just keep the flywheel stock, or buy one that is just a little lighter rather then one that is "too" light?

I mean with the exception of dead weight loss, why buy a 10 pound wheel that responds as a 16 pound wheel... you dont gain much. other then the fact that you lost 6 pounds off the car.

I guess what I am trying to say is that I personally would not want buy a 10 pound flywheel that responded as a 16 pound flywheel with alot of its weight on the outside. the 6 pounds of dead weight loss is not enough to warrent a $500 cost. I want the 6 pounds of dead loss, and more then anything the 6 pounds of spinning mass gone!

If you guys need any flywheels, we have some 9.5 lb ones on for dirt cheap right now.
Do we have a weight on the stock flywheel yet?

I just got my counterweight and bolts in the mail today!

Weighted on a fishing scale the counterweight and bolts were 4.1 lbs!

added weight

what flywheel did you go with? where did you get the counter and bolts from?

I take it the bolts do NOT come with either the counter weight or the flywheel?

so that would mean that the 12 flywheel from racing beat (includes weight of counter) is accually lighter then the "10" from ACT?

10 pound flywheel + 4.1 pounds = 14.1 pounds..... that kinda sucks. :/

and the ACT street lite is

13.9 pounds + 4.1 pounds = 18 pounds, that would be worse then the factory wheel???

WTF?

are we all sure theat they are not counting the weight of the flywheel AND COUNTERWEIGHT? I know Mazdaspeed and Racing beat do. Unorthodox has one built in, so I know that one also is counted in the total.

another reason can be found in the Mazdaspeed wheel they are using chromoly which is heavier then alumium but will provide a longer lifetime as far as wear is concerned vs an aluminum wheel

I ordered my flywheel on tuesday from Drag 'n Drift Warehouse, found them on ebay for $319. I was looking at the Prolite for the longest time, but in the end I decided that I wanted a replacable friction surface so I could keep the flywheel hopefully for the life of the car without having to resurface anything. I went with the fidanza after finding out it was one of the (if not THE) lightest offered at 8.5 lbs with a replacable friction surface. counterweight and bolts to my door from srmotorsports was $180, but generally unless they are offered as a package deal you have to buy the flywheel, the counterweight and the bolts separatly.

from rx7.com..."All ACT flywheels are made from forged Chrome-Moly Steel which is stronger than cast iron, billet steel or aluminum, CNC Machined to exact tolerances"

That install on the ACT prolite went well. I know we will be able to do the other 3 in record time now that we got the first out of the way. Definately is a pretty flywheel. We got some "before" and "after" revs which would be great for others to see.

he he, yeah install went well, thanks for your help Kwescott, Ghost, Cesar, Snowfl8k, and MeShell.

of course we were anticipating a big differance and got a little over excited. when running the car after the install we were a little dissapointed. but I have to admit she sure does blow through 1st and 2nd much faster. there is no longer that delay after shifting. once shifted she pulls fairly hard right away. throttle responce is a lot better to.

I will try and find a way to get the vids up at the same time. (side by side)
if not I will post before and after vids seperate. you really notice it more in the vids when you watch the after install vid first a couple times, then you go back to watching the before vid. before seems so much slower.

yeah Speeddemon!

i especially like the side by side shots of ACT vs stock. really shows the differences between centers of gravity.

after the install i gotta say, all those "the car feel faster now" and ill bet it took ---- seconds off my quarter mile" are a bit far fetched. yes the car revs faster while in neutral, but the 50 some-odd precent reduction of force required to spin the flywheel pales in comparison to how much power the car still needs to turn everything else while in gear. the car desnt feel like its any faster then before. if it is, we are talking something along the lines of .005 off your 0-60 at best. 1st and 2nd gear MIGHT be a bit faster but 3rd,4th,5th,6th is the same.

for the people that say "9.75lbs is an overkill" or "you have to relearn how to drive", thats complete BS. the only gear that is a tiny bit harder to use is 1st gear but its negligable, almost none existent. if you can drive stick, you can drive this car with the ACT prolite.

honestly, this mod isnt for everyone. most people wont get any benefit from something like this. however, if you find youreslf needing to healtoe, revmatch or need faster throttle respone in 1st and 2nd gear (really evident when you blip on and off the throttle), this is where this mod shines. most the improvements are had when the car is not engaged in gear which is a fraction of driving.

speaking of heel toeing and revmatching, i gotta say. its an absolute joy now. its a litteral "blip" where as before i had to hold the throttle for about split second.

its like a toned down shortshifter is a sence. well, its not as obviouse as the shortshifter but if you know how to appreciate these kinds of things, you will. dont expect to gain any performance out of it. if your slow before the flywheel youll still be slow after it.

by the way speeddemon, do you know anyone that can do some custom piping for me? j/k

yeah it seems as though we all felt the same thing. we all noticed a differance in 1st and second. I noticed it run through a little faster. take off was NO harder then normal, spin down was much faster, and when you turn off the key the engine STOPS the split second you turn that key off.

all in all I am happy with it. I think I was expecting to much like everyone else. but we all need to remember that Mazda designed that car with a pretty light flywheel from factory as it was. the total weight drop was only 3.5 pounds. (mostly on the out side). most other cars drop triple that ammount when droping to a lighter flywheel, so yeah they are going to notice a bigger differance.

none the less, here is how i see it. $360 gets you:

pros-
noticable (to me) gain running through 1st and 2nd.
smoother broader pull through the gears
no more hesatation or "bog" after shifting
faster revs in nuetral (WOOOOOO)
much faster shutoff (WOOOOO)

cons-
little rougher idle
little harder to take off in 1st (and i mean a LITTLE)

(also keep in mind we all litterally driven only about 1 or 2 miles on this new flywheel, lets see if i have a bigger smile tomorrow after really getting a feel for it.)

the true test comes sunday when I get to see what it does on the track!

more on the results to come.....

even more so, if you are able to pull some faster times than me, since I wasn't the first in line to get the flywheel install Let the race for the RX8 Cup begin.

lol.. no kidding.

when i first saw the rev in neutral, i was like "WTF?". i really felt like i wasted some major $$$. but after the first few seconds behind the wheel i snapped back to reality and realized the true benefits. i was pretty excited about getting flywheel after that but now that ive seen the befor and after vids. I CANT WAIT!

not sure what you are saying ghost - in your review you said you couldn't tell the difference - now you can't wait ?
