Question Exhaust & Intake info~~ plz give ur comments!!!

HelloOo everyone~~

after owning the 8 for 8 months now...
i'm looking for some perfomance mods...
and exhaust and intake is the only 2 i'm looking into right now...

i was wondering if anyone with modded exhaust can put down ur opinions of it...
this will serve a GREAT review for me...
both pros & cons....

( i don't want a screamer... something with a DEEP roar~~ )
me don't like the ricer sound.... just want something with a mean deep sound...
after listening to some clips i find HKS deeper... dont' know if i'm right..
can be the quality of clips not good...

so as for now i'm leaning towards HKS Legamax... :p
as for intake i'm most likely going for HKS too...
heard too much bad things about the K&N...

btw... wuts the difference between "stanless steal" & "titanium" exhaust??!

so all ur inputs will be greatly appreciated...
thanks guys!!!! :D

PS: other than Rx8 store, rotary extreme, vivid racing, and japan parts....
what other place did u guys purchase from??

I got the Borla from the rx8store.
I'd go with stainless steel. Unless you can afford titanium....

I wouldn't mess with the intake right now.
Go for a high flow cat/midpipe

or suspension

The Racing Beat Cat back is really nice (I have it on my car), & the new air intake by them will be very good as well (coming out, some of us have seen it already.

Titanium is definitely lighter, in some cases it is 50+% lighter than the stainless steel exhausts. A few have cracked so durability is a question, not to mention that it is 2X+ more expensive than a standard steel exhaust. Also, no difference in hp gain. A hi-flow cat or midpipe will allow the exhaust to open up & flow freer thus creating more hp. In the RX8 it will give you about 4-6 hp (a little bit more than the cat-back exhaust).

I've seen the HKS pieces. Both are top quality, but be prepared to pay $ for them. Very nice though.

Other places you may want to look are : www.mazdatrix.com & www.mazdaparts.com (see vendor area below & sign up for gold pricing).

i have a borla and really like it. i have heard tha racing beat is a little deeper and more subdued. i must is the mid pipe and hi flow catalytic converter. i got mine from SR motorsports. it really frees up power in the higher rpms. to keep the sound down get the resonator ($60) too. i have the rotary extreme intake which may or may not add hp but adds noise...so maybe wait on that

I prefer the Borla sound, and as you wrote I find it having a "deeper" sound to it... and I absolutely love the way it sounds in idle mode.

I have to toss in my SR Motorsports bid. They are a bit pricey, but the sound and appearance is incredible.

When it comes to intakes, the only one I'd consider is the yet to be released Racing Beat system. It is very well designed. It will be out shortly.

On the exhaust side I do like the Racing Beat but really feel that this should be a personal choice based on what you feel sounds the best. No exhaust is going to give you big gains so don't expect miracles here. Just find some people who have different systems and see how you like them.

i have the hks intake and love it... I don't care what people say" blah blah no power gains blah blah" well there was a power gain...some people will just be more biased than others but i don't want to start another intake war...The hks instake sounds great and works well with the hks legamax exhaust. The exhaust isn't too loud but sounds great. I don't have the exhaust but have driven behind a car that does many times... If you want to go the extra mile and spend a few more bucks i'd opt for the hks parts. The design of the racing beat intake looks pretty good as well...but i would not go with k&n...

It's early for me in regards to mod's but it seems from what I've read here and at RB, they are really the company of choice. OK...based on this post and a few others, I'm begining to sound like I work for them...lol

I'm very frustrated, just finished typing a long reply with test specs etc. and it disappeared when i clicked on submit... Ahhh.

Well the short version is as follows.

I've had the Mazdaspeed CAI on for about 2 weeks and HATE it. Loss of low end power and huge gain in noise at full throttle with NO noticeable gain in power.
So I used a G-Tech and experimented with 3 different setups. Here is what I found. (Car full fuel, no junk in the trunk, just me = 1500kg at the weighscale.)
Just FYI, Full fuel car only no passenger or driver = 1400kg (accurate to +/- 10kg).

Stock Intake = 184HP

Stock intake with drop in K&N = 190HP

Mazdaspeed CAI = 185HP; but slower throttle response + loss of low end power.

Did some research and found some AEM test documents that show the K&N flows at least 2 to 3.5 times more air (depending on the amount of air flowed) than most of the other filters available and it DOES NOT let more dirt through; thats a myth.

The calculated RENESIS maximum engine air flow at WOT @ 8000rpm is just under 400CFM. Most stock filters and even the AEM DRYFLOW (Madzaspeed filter) cannot flow that much air without a significant pressure drop.
According to the graphs its almost a 5" water pressure drop for the DRYFLOW and only a 2.5" water drop for the K&N, with "NO DUST LEAKAGE" detected.

So in my opinion If you want to keep the good low end response and get decent power gains throughout the rev range, if you are still under warranty, use the stock intake with a K&N drop in panel filter #33-2284 (rated to 441CFM with no noticeable pressure drop). It will flow as much as your engine will ever demand in an unboosted setup.

Out of warranty, the Raceing Beat REVi with the ram air attachment.
This keeps the tuned intake horn for smooth air delivery and uses a free flowing short ram design and still maintains a big box for that accumulator effect to help low end throttle response. Rated for a 10HP increase at 8000rpm.

Honestly though, for an extra 4HP, is $350plus really worth it ?
I'd say the stock setup and a K&N panel filter is a pretty good bang for your buck. Save that extra $300 towards a free flowing exhaust system. Thats the other half of maximising your engine's breathing efficiency.

Hope this info was useful.

Wow, I can't imagine what the long version of your post looked like. That's a lot of effort to reply to something over 2 years old. Hope this helps someone.

please detail your experimental method . If you did only one run with each setup I would be very sceptical of those results from a G-tech.
Otherwise good on you for putting in the effort .......
