I built my own using a flow master 44 and a some steel bends TIG it all up and have been running it for a year now. You will get a bunch of people on here that will tell you the 8 will burn out a cheap muffler due to heat, and this is true if you are using a 20-30 dollar muffler, but you can find quality ones at a low price that can. I bought my 44 that was bulit to flow big blocks in the 1/4 for 80 bucks and it has handled the heat just fine. I also know of a few guys that have been running off the shelf borla mufflers that work good to, just a little more than the flowmaster. I do recommend TIG instead of MIG do to the heat and risk off cracking, but I have been a TIG welder for 6 years so I am kind of byes lol. Good luck and nice to see people using there own hands to build what they need.

I take it your buddy works at a muffler shop being you are getting some free mufflers. Why don't you just have him bend some pipe for the exhaust and throw some tips on. As mentioned earlier by another member you get what you pay for.

iam a welder and pipe bender by trade. i work in the bio field so every thing has to be +/- .005 or less. i could do this all by my self . the problem is my one friend with a lift etc doesnt have a welder and i couldnt use his garage long enough make my own.
my buddy that works at a muffler shop owes me so he said hed help me out and get me any mufflers i wanted and can get me in there for a few hours on a sunday. not enough time to make a full one, and i dont want to cut and splice in to the stock setup since i cant get the flanges etc.if need be i want to be able to go back to stock. i went to a few shops and they all quoted me roughly 300$ if i brought them the tips and mufflers. but they all said the same thing they would just cut in to the exhaust about a foot after the flang after the cat and weld the rest in to that. to go back to stock id have to buy a new stock setup and do more cutting and welding to get the old one in.

i figured i could just buy the e bay cat back for 300$ and just remove the tips and mufflers and welded in my own. id still pay the same for a shop to custome make me a setup. but atleast it would be a bolt in job and could go back to stock. i just wasnt to sure how good the tubing was and if this was just a really bad idea.

i tried looking for a stock muffler for sale or some one near by so i could rent it and make a jig.but the used ones i found wanted more then i was willing to pay and every one in mass just seemed to junk the stock setup lol,

so really my question is this is it really a bad idea just to use the ebay ones for the tubing? or iam i after a year gonna have a huge hole?

if i decied to just have a shop make me one what mufflers would you say would be the best for flow but not too loud for the rx8 ect? i know from rx7 club most guys just say get some thing is packed with steel wool.

Look for a stock exhaust system in the for sale section or post WTB. For free you take it.

People throw away the stock exhaust when they upgrade.

The only mufflers you will burn out will have material in there. I don't know of any mufflers, but a lot of resonators have fiberglass in them. Most mufflers don't have any material inside.

Also, I wonder if anybody has shortened the stock exhaust length? It's been proven that a shorter exhaust will give you better top end, at the expense of low end. I had run an Escort RS2000 for a while with just the header and cat, and it had one hell of a top end. Bottom end sucked, but I think it would be really good for an 8!
