I do not have the information handy, and it was a while back when I got it, but what I remember is you can buy the WDS programmer. then you get a subscription to the mazda site to download the files. this can be a one day, or monthly or yearly subscription.

the price for all of this is very expensive. And I think the reason for this is tecnically / legally the manufacturers have to let other people than just their dealers be able to work on the cars. So the way to restrict this is charge a LOT of money for it.

when I get home I will try to find the part numbers again.

well I suspected as much

You are mistaken, the WDS software system allows you to drop a pre-programmed flash into the PCM, but it does not allow you to to the actual flash programming. You don't need the WDS to install your own flashes either. All you need is a laptop, a CAN pass-thru device, and a subscription to the Madza service tech website. Zoom44 posted up the newest low-cost passthru device recently.

Anyways, this is now OT for the subject at hand. Mazda is not selling you the source software to program your own flashes.

I spoke to Cobb tuning today about the Accessport for the RX-8. There is no set date or schedule for it's completion. They are working on it but it won't be released soon. Best guesses were 3rd quarter of this year at the earliest.

Currently we can do all the reflash at hand. Just that, no one is bold enough to do it to their own car with a modified one yet :p This include me, until I am 100% sure or have a spare ecu to play with. Man I need to file my tax return.

no they wont sell you what you think- they will sell you the hardware/software you would need at the dealership which would allow you to run diags and flash. but what we want is the software that allows us to plug in an change the tune ourselves or create a flash. that mazda does not sell. there's only a small handful of guys at MNAO that even use it. i know the names of two or 3. none of them even create a flash- the flashes are all created in japan.

man I feel good RG suggests the Accessport... By the time that thing comes out I'll have all the NA modifications done. I know others have reached 200, I'm thinkin 220 though...

Q3? I certainly hope it doesn't take that long! It won't be next week, certainly, but we're making pretty good progress. The reflashing part is done. We've reflashed our in-house '05 RX-8 over 100 times already!

One thing we do need are more resources...and by that I mean talented programmers. We're hiring, so if you want to code or hack ECUs for a living, you should contact me.

Cheers,

Trey not to come off sounding like an ungrateful idealistic bastard but...

Personally I would much rather crack the PCM and ECU's and give back the information to the community than to do it and not further the knowledge of others. Perhaps its partly because I do alot of firmware development now (IT/InfoSec appliances) and give alot of what I do as my day job back to the opensource community.

I am definately going to be the first in line when the AP 2.0 is finally released simply because it will be the most elegant solution availible.

I still believe that ultimately the information should be free for anyone who wants to understand how it all works to learn from.

Now if someone could possibly send me a copy of the image...I'm too lazy to get at my daily driver...haa haa...

Cheers mate...

No but he IS asking for people (to hire) to help develop a closed source product...for very good reason...however I am merely stating that I would rather have all the information open...

Perhaps to foolishly sway them into interacting and sharing...with the community...for a win-win situation...perhaps an API to the AP...that would be fantastic...

Your lack of comprehension however...absolutely brilliant!

EDIT: I firmly believe that collectively alot of good minds would make progress faster. Alot of open source products and development are based on that same principle. It would be easy to open a page on sourceforge and as a group track progress and share information/discoveries/etc...it would esp be helpful to stop reinventing the wheel and start standardizing...If a collective single effort has started long ago, I'd be surprised if it had not already produced good results.

No worries on the image BTW...I couldnt help myself and snagged it last night...

if you simply produce the source code for example...then the people whom understand the variables can tune them...and hopefully in the process its gets better. A PRIME example would be...say you gave MazdaManic the source for the Greddy unit...and directions on HOW to recompile the image...my job would be completed at simply providing to HIM the HOW...let him figure out the WHAT...and then everyone wins...

You lack the ability to see anything else other than yourself my friend...no one will EVER know everything...however if you find the people who know the things you dont, you can learn from them and they in turn from you...

what they actually protect is their own intellectual property, like I said there is nothing preventing anyone from pursuing the unlocking of the RX-8 PCM on their own, but the main reason it nwas being done here is because nobody was offering anything, that's all going to change now
I flagellate as often as I can...provided I do not generate blisters...haa...

What COBB has is a wonderful easy way to get AT the image and wonderful tools to make changes...its an interface to a complex system...a wonderful one at that...and again I for one will be first in line to buy it...

What you are missing is that I do not want to crack thier unit...I do have a desire to understand the code of the PCM itself...and while you are right that if anyone can understand that then knock-off products will emerge...however I doubt as elegant...

Products are made on support and design...

Well I only mention MM because I know he is not just a tinker-er...but would also be the only sadist who would actually force himself to learn whatever he had to...simply for his own sake...I am positive there are others out there...however they are merely not as....driven?

Well, Team...while your not interested in understanding the inner-workings, ins/outs, or anything else...that doesnt mean others are not...

Remember...there ARE other people who exist outside of the paperbag...as hard as that may be to believe...haa...

MM has been around for a LONG time...I personally respect him very very highly...was around back in the MX-3 days...

Team...ego...and comic relief...knowledgable...

I still think hes a good guy...this is afterall a forum...if you cant **** people off on the internet...whats the point??

=)

Yeah I create/develop products for companies to license...mainly IT-centric...

When it comes to making a product I learned the hard way that its not just IF you can do something...a "Product" is more than a device...it has to be a complete package...support/docs/warranty/supply/etc...THAT is the hard part...
